104 Degree heat, FD making strange noise..

Hey all. I usually don't say much in the forums so this is one of my extremely rare posts. I usually just enjoy reading everyone elses posts. Wealth of info here. My 7 has been an absolute dream as of late. No problems at all for a yr and a half! I baby the hell out of it and rarely run it hard. Back to the subject at hand. I've been daily driving my '93 for the last wk and a half due to my wife needing my s10 for commuting. It hit 104 degrees in the shade here in the Sac valley today. This morning during routine driving conditions (not wot or anything of the sort, mind you) on the way to work, soon as I hit 2nd gear my FD began to make a kind of winding noise that I've never heard before. Soon as I hit the parking lot at work, I popped the hood and checked my intake n intercooler piping and hoses making sure everything was all nice n snug. No new puddles or anything like that either beneath the chassis. Also noticed my RB catback for some reason sounded a bit quieter . However, idle seems normal (I don't have my boost guage installed yet still, so not sure about any abnormal boost pattern). Fast forward til about 7ish this evening. Take it out for a (little more aggressive) spin around the block, makes the same sound, but louder and more obnoxious. Reminded me of how a radio controlled car sounds (audible just above the exhaust note). I've never really driven the FD in this kind of heat before. My reliability mods are listed in my sig at the bottom if that helps any. What do you guys think? Gotta get my *** to bed cuz I gotta get up for work early tomorrow so I apologize for the lack of more info. I appreciate any input from you guys. Thanks!

what are your getting these temp readings from? whats your normal readings? are you running an apexi or stock ecu?

idk what the noise is but my rad fans were messed up and i was running an avg of 103 temps in NJ... once i switched them to working ones i was back at 87 all day..... sorry im not good at diagnosing problems so ill leave it to the experts..

Cody, I don't know what the noise could be. However one thing I noticed that I thought I'd point out is that "babying" your car during normal operation is not necessarily a good thing with a rotary. Provided your boost is properly controlled it's a very good thing to redline these cars when under boost, it helps reduce carbon buildup inside of the engine. So long as the engine is properly warmed up high revs equals a happy engine, giving adequate cool down time (not turning on a turbo timer and walking away!) before you come to the end of your journey is also excellent for the car.

woof,

Do you hear the noise only when the car is moving or can you hear it by revving the car in neutral?

That's just the general outside temperature. Never really drove it much in the heat and was wondering if the heat outside had anything to do with it. ECU is stock btw.

Ok, makes sense to me. Carbon buildup actually never popped in my mind. I'm still running under stock boost as well, and warm it up fully before taking it anywhere.

Just when it's running. It hasn't made the sound yet today, but the outside temps are around the mid-90's I'd say. However, the car sounds quieter..yet it seems to idle perfectly. I'm praying it isn't a loose vacuum line or anything nasty like that..

Does is sound like it might be an exhaust leak? If it is quieter at the muffler maybe it could be because you have an exhaust leak further upstream? Just a thought

Gonna look into that tomorrow morning. Didn't think of that either. While driving it today, it seemed to have some backpressure when the secondary kicked in, which it hasn't had before. Then it'd sound almost raspy (kinda like way back in the day when the only aftermarket mods I had for my old 3rd gen eclipse was a cold air intake w/ bypass valve and stock exhaust lacking the resonators). But as soon as I'd slow down to around to 25-35 mph, it'd sound almost normal again. Weird..

Do yu have the pre-cat or main cat still? If so, the beads may have welded together and the sound is being caused by a clogged cat/pre-cat.

I bought a one owner S5 in January. It had been babied.

While the car was very clean, it was necessary to remove all manifolds, clean, and replace the actuators for the secondary ports.

Yeah, I know this isn't the 2nd gen forum, but it still applies.

Drive it to redline on a regular basis.
Maybe after the ambient temps drop a bit of course.
