I am looking for a 93+ RX7. I am limited on budget, but I have found a few for 7500$ with blown motors. I have found a place around here that will give me a remanufactured motor for 2300+core. Is this a good deal??? Also, when they replace the motor, will that have new turbos too usually? If not, how long are the turbos good for? What other problems could I expect on a 100k plus mile RX7. I have long admired their beauty and performance, but don't know much about them. Please any help is appreciated, even a link to an informative site would help. Thanks

Speaking from experience, budget another 6k to get it in the realm of right. If you buy one with a blown motor you won't be able to tell if the tranny/ differential/ suspension/ turbos are still good. I'm not saying they are going to be bad, but you just can't tell. You'll also want to upgrade and not just return it to stock, this can be a double-edged sword if you need it for daily transportation.

Do a search. I remember several threads over the past month about Malloy Mazda selling remans for $1950. They don't come with turbos.

If you buy an FD with a blown engine, don't let a Mazda dealer replace it. You will be much better off spending the time and money to go to a good tuner to put the reman in (or rebuild it). An example of good places on your side of the country would be Rotary Performance in Garland, TX; KD Rotary in PA, Pettit Racing in FL.

Also as paw140 pointed out, $2300 isn't really that good of a deal for a reman. The Malloy Mazda is $1950 and is essentially a new motor with new water pump, all gaskets, etc.

As far as how long the turbos last I can say I have 143K on my original turbos and they are still near perfect. I have no boost problems. I think it depends on how the car was driven. Mine was all highway miles and the owner never drove the car over 4,000 RPM. So it depends on how well taken car of it was. If your turbo's are bad and u don't live in cali, I would just get a single turbo.

No it isn't, it's pulling better thanks to GD's injectors so pay him up.

For an RX7 with over 100k a lot of things go wrong. I have 117k on my odometer. Some of the things taht went wrong with it while i had it was:
The tranny
The twin turbos
the motor
some sensors, and wires
My rear suspenion bushings were bad

When i was installing the single turbo i noticed a lot more things wrong due to heat cycle and wear and tear (i daily drive my car):
Almost all the hoses in thera' nest were all brittle and worn.
My brake booster hose was brittle
My wiring harness was super brittle (this is very expensive to replace and install if you have someone else do it)
My oil metering lines were brittle as well.
My fuel pulsation damper was bad
My primary injectors were leaking


Most of the aforementioned problems are common wear and tear that happens on 3rd gens. replaced all of them although it cost me an arm and a leg and a lot of time. If you have enough patience, and money, you can do it yourself. BTW, Mazda rebuild motors are crap, i wouldn't recommend getting them. They are not build very well and they use a lot of used parts (rotors, rotor housings, etc...). Usually Mazda rebuilds leak oil from the front cover gasket, and also the oil pan. Those two things cost a lot to fix as well. You are better off having a reputable mechnic build you a better one to begin with.
