Has anyone tested one of these airbags to verify that they do in fact work when spliced in like this?

If the airbag were malfunctioning the Airbag light indicator would stay on .... There may be another way to validate, but that is one solid way to know

I think that is probably a valid statement; however, I have some doubts. I am no electrical engineer, but I imagine the system just measures the resistance to check that something is there. Just because the system is measuring the correct resistance does not mean it can correctly trigger the airbag.

If anyone knows more about how the system works I would really appreciate some concrete knowledge. I think the steering wheel looks great and would love to do this on my car, I just want to make sure everything checks out as I do not want an airbag in the face.

Excellent writeup though!

Great post but I have one question. My new wheel doesn't seem to have three wires. I only have two. Is it save to assume that I match up wires one and two as you shown above?

The third wire I am missing appears to be for the horn. Hmmm

Yeah the third wire is for the horn.
I'm not positive but I'm pretty sure it just connects up to that little broken connector to the right of the bottom hex bolt on your new wheel. You can see it on the left side of your picture.

Just unscrew the complete horn wire from you stock wheel, they are 2 threaded hole on either side of the Nardi wheel you can use, one less wire to cut and solder

You're poking around in the wrong sub-forum. Go to the 3rd Gen parts for sale forum and make a "[Wanted to Buy]" thread there. These steering wheels pop up for sale quite often over there.

For a different question, does anyone know if anyone has ever tried to stick the old Mazda logo on the airbag instead of the Flying M or the Nardi logo? If I ever did this mod, I'd want the logo to match the rest of the car, and there's currently not a single badge in the cabin (and certainly no Flying M anywhere!)

The only way it'll look OEM is probably use an old MX-3 steering wheel with the old Mazda emblem, It'll have the right horn connector but I don't think it has an airbag.

An additional information: when using a flying M nardi steering wheel from a miata, the airbag connectors are plug and play on Series 8 / 1999-2002 RX-7. On earlier versions, they are not.
