hey folks digging this up to add a bit of information that may be useful.
first off is supplying ground to the tachometer and speedometer:
so it is not necessary to run a separate ground to the chassis as described here, although it does not hurt to do so. really all you need to do is tie the ground for those two gauges to the other half of the cluster as pictured below.
ground for speedometer and tachometer
so looks like for these gauges they separated the grounds for some reason, possible that the new ground goes to a sensor ground. i have not hooked up the boost gauge yet to see if that is affected. as you can see in the old gauge cluster the ground wire that the tachometer attaches to runs over to the other side of the cluster and off to that ground whereas the 99 cluster does not.
the next thing to notice is that the oil and cruise pins on the old cluster have changed to bm (boost module) and gnd. i would de-pin these on the cluster harness as they may interfere with cluster operation.
to de-pin them release the lock on the side using a pick or something then insert the pick through the front towards the middle of the connector of the wire you want to de-pin and slide it out.
insert pick here and pry the lock out, do the same on the other side of the lock.
hopefully this saves some folks some time and possible frustrations with installing this cluster. for reference this is on a jdm S6 so i did not have to do anything else to get it going. i may wire the boost gauge up at some point but i do not have an external map sensor currently so i will need to wire one in or try to configure an output on the adaptronic to control the gauge. if people are interested in this i will try to put together a little write up on how to configure the output on some ecus.

I have also seen all the new gauges swapped into the old housing and it works with no modifying at all. Just something to add if you want a plug and play way of doing it. The boost gauge will not work though of course.
Can you wire up the newish boost gauge and use it to replace the old oil pressure (mine never worked any good)or water temp gauges? I already have backup oil pressure, water temp, and a turbo timer/boost gauge wired in). What wires would need to be run? I assume the boost signal, power and ground? The other removed gauges signals would need to be cut?
I like my 94 chrome ring face and just want to swap some internals like the tach and turbo gauge.
You can swap the chrome rings over to another cluster easy, that's no big deal. The problem nowadays is getting your hands on the later cluster with the boost gauge, I don't think you can get JUST the boost gauge.
You can swap just that part of the cluster over but the lighting/font may not match up.

I currently have a stock 94 peg with cruise control, and a flakey tach needle (which I want to fix, but am having trouble). I also have the later (99?) cluster with the boost gauge and 6’oclock 0 tach. BUT, the 99 cluster tach does not have a ‘cruise’ window on the faceplate, so I really don’t want to use the face plate. I wonder if I could swap the tach mechanism/its circuit board) to the 94 display?? The 94 tach does not appear to have any burnt caps, but maybe that’s it? Would also like to swap the boost gauge (but have to do that WITH the coolant gauge) as they are one unit together. That would require the splice to the boost sensor, I know-and getting rid of the oil pressure gauge connections) Any advice here? I’ve seen a few ‘bouncy tach fixes’ write ups here but not sure they apply. I’ve taken my 94 display out and apart 2x now, same with the 99 cluster looking for differences.
I have a '94 R2 that I added cruise control to. The Cruise indicator in the tach is neat but not required at all. I swapped out to a 99 tach (my stock tach didn't have the cruise light either) and I'm fine with that.
You can swap the tach board but getting the needle off can be tricky.
You could also send both clusters to Michael Gagne in Canada and have him make you one good cluster with how you want it all set up. He will also fully go through the cluster and repair it. If you do it right, you can have a nice cluster for your car the way you want it and another good cluster you can sell.
