$236 to change the fuel filter!?!
Well I have never taken my FD to the dealer for service as I work on it myself, but being short on time this weekend and wanting to immediately head off the future problems that could be caused by a clogged fuel filter, I took it to Mazda. Over the phone I was quoted 30 or 40 dollars for the filter and 1/2 hr of labor. I thought that sounded reasonable so I drove over. Turns out they were going to charge me 60 for the filter and 2 hrs of labor for the grand total of 236 dollars...for a fuel filter! Needless to say I gave the service manager a piece of mind and left. I will take a gasoline bath, buy an aftermarket fuel filter and save 220 bucks.
How much were you all charged to have someone do your fuel filter (mazda or otherwise)? Sorry, just had to vent.

I think it was $20 filter and ~30 minutes of my own labor. I did not take a gas bath but did have some leak down my arm. Make sure to close your eyes and hold your breath - get proper ventilation (big fans).
it is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. i don't know why it has such a bad rep. if you are the least bit mechanically inclined, it should take you no more than an hour. get on rob robinette's site for detailed instruction.

Shoot for $60+ the filter I would put it on someone's car, if they were local.
Holy Sh*t!!!!
Thats probably what Ferrari or Porsche charge for fuel filter replacement!! Next time see if you can do it yourself or have someone give you a hand. A 3rd gen is still a car its not really hard just some things require more time and less area to work in to get it done.
relocate to the engine bay with a washable K&N, only way to fly....the stock location is on crack
I can clean mine in about 3 minutes with no tools, and no gas bath....no lie....every 3k miles, and it always has dirt in it

Funny you should mention this, I just had the dealer change mine too. I bought the filter with the idea that I was going to do it myself too. But then saw where it was and really didnt feel like taking it on. They charged me about $85 for labor. I just might think about doing it myself next time.
My mechanic moves the filter bracket to a lower place on the rear end subframe . you must drill two holes and change the rubber hoses. His filters have screw in lines, not push on lines. A filter change takes about 2 min. maybe 3.

Filter will be about $55-$75. Mazdaformance has them priced on the low end but add shipping. Labor should only be "one" hour but rates can vary from $65-$100/hr depending where you take it. Most dealers should be $110-$130. The phone quote you got was not for a 3rd gen.
$236 seems pretty high.
It is a bitch from hell job to do if you have very big hands at all.
Now that I have done it once I believe I could do it again in an hour or so.
But I would still rather install a downpipe than do a FD fuel filter!

Another possible reason is that the FD has a high-flow fuel pump, so more fuel will be flowing through there than in a car with a lower capacity fuel pump.

on my bike list some bright spark pulled the fuel pump fuse and tested the current draw on a new filter, say 1.5amps
he then put in an old filter, known to be a little blocked a little, and tested what current that drew at idle, say 2.2amps
as fuel filters can last a very long time or very short time depending on the quality of the fuel this allows must of us to check the flow capabilites of our filters without replacing them needlessly...
anyone want to tell me what the current draw is on their newly replace filter , with engine at idle, so i can i can compare the 1 on my, new to me, FD, 110,000kms
i also have 1 i pulled of a wrecked R2 that has 60,000kms but have hesitated to try swapping them as my car seems to run so well as is

recommend using a something like a fluke digital meter that can handle currents od up to 10amps for 30 sec
