Question Is $200 buckaroos for an HKS SPF Intake a good price?

I was down at one of the local speedshops, and a guy by the name of Nate (who works at the store), saw my RX-7 and was like "Is that yours?"

Apparently, he's had his RX-7 in the shop for the past year after getting screwed by Mazdas & More, he took it to Atkins for a rebuild, and then finally, a gentlemen at Apex (i?) in Seattle is doing it for him. He's going single turbo, and it should be done by next week.

He was a really nice guy, very friendly, and very nice. I felt bad for him after he told me his story about Mazdas & More screwed him over. I don't remember all the details, but I've decided I'm never dealing with them again.

Anyways, he offered to sell me "brand new, still in da box" HKS SPF Intake (at least I think that's what it is) for 200 buckaroos. He said he picked it up in Japan, but since he's going single turbo he doesn't need it anymore.

It's on the web already advertised, but he said it'd be helluva lot easier just to sell it to someone locally, and he doesn't get on the net much.

Is the HKS a good intake for the RX-7?

I'm gonna go do some research on it, but does anyone have any suggestions or opinions?

Personally, I would never use either a foam-element intake or an open air intake (of which the HKS is both). I know a few long termers who have used the HKS intakes and hated them. If you want an open intake, go with the Apexi ($250 at the store) or the Blitz ($350 at the store). Of course, those intakes won't fit with a larger SMIC, so there you go.

If you just want something cheap, do the "poor-man's intake" with a K&N filter. That will cost you about $75.

Nah..it wasn't that I wanted something cheap or whatevers.

It was just something that I was offered, and not knowing much about the different types of intakes for the RX-7, I figured "what the hey!" might as well ask.

I just checked out HKS's website and they're selling it for $400 buckaroos, but I imagine you could get it for a much cheaper price somewhere else.

I'm doing some reading on it....but if it's the fact that the foam was deteriating and causing problems, I imagine it's because people aren't switching the filters out every so often like you're supposed to.

You just can't stick an foam type filter on and not expect to have to change it. It's a filter....just like any other filter.

Is that the problem with them?

To be honest, mods are the last thing on my mind..but hell..I'd be a fool if I passed up every good offer that comes my way.

From what i've heard, the HKS unit sucks. The filters get dirty really quik but if you want to change them then thats fine. Also it is open air like rynberg said and it doesn't have that great of flow compared to the apex. And last, it looks fucken ugly

That's a good enough reason for me NOT to get it..heh.

I was just wondering. I just did the research on it...and yes..apparently it's rate of flow sucks.

I'm good thanks for the info!

rynberg is right.

The HKS unit isn't that good at filtering and it also sucks in HOT air from the engine compartment. If your planning on keeping the airpump then you'll also need to buy a new one every year or so because the hot air will destroy the airpump.

I've had two project cars with the HKS intake, the intake tracts were REALLY dirty. Imagine a rotary engine, just spinning round and round, a little dirt will just grind the rotor housing plating and apex seals to pieces. Piston engines are more tolerant of a little dirt.

Get a good intake with PAPER based filters. M2, PFS or any other intake that has an actual ducted cold air source. Open foam elements don't do a good job filtering.
