What in the world is goin on with my shifter panel???

So I took the shifter panel off because I’m gonna replace the bushings in the shifter, and as soon as I got it off I was faced with a few questions lol first, why do I have two fog light buttons and one defrost button? What is supposed to go there because the one fog light button wasn’t even connected, just kinda hangin out and there was no “empty” plug underneath. Also what is the tiny lightbulb for in front of my arm rest/ ash tray area? It looks as if there’s no way for the light to shine though anywhere in the event it was turned on. I got it from a dealer and seeing stuff like this makes me worried about what else is hidden and if maybe I indeed have a polished turd 🤔

Oh two more questions, and sorry about the picture placement, it’s hard to manage when posting via cell phone lol there’s a nut on the shift lever, it’s supposed to keep the boot from sliding down, but being that it’s actually threaded, and just slid down the shaft I’m assuming that’s not OEM, is there something that should be there? And also where does the white bracket go to on the harness? It’s just floating around too, thanks for any and all help!

So...regarding the two fog light buttons I had the same thing, however my USDM FD was imported to Germany in 1993. In order to pass German road inspection (TUV) they had to add a switch for the rear fog light (which they also added...)

So in my case an additional rear fog light was added under the rear bumper, and the blank switch (USDM) was changed into a second fog light switch...I know...its pretty ridiculous.

Considering your based in the US....who knows what it was used for? Maybe someone lost the blank and replaced it with an extra switch?

But now that its already there...why not use it for something cool? Like a fuel cut switch when you flood the engine? Or maybe a manual fan switch or something like that?

That is a good thought! Maybe I’ll source a blank and and just hang onto the switch until the time is right, I like your thinkin. And mine is a JDM rx7, no fog lights in the back tho, unless they were removed and the switch was left 🤷🏻*♂️ Who knows

The light bulb doesn't really work with the arm rest piece. If you have the ash tray there is a small window in the front to direct that light.

Most likely the second fog light switch was added by a previous owner. This was a common mod back in the day, you would wire that into your fans to kick the fans on.

The white plastic thing just goes over one of the studs to keep the harness in place. No biggie here, that's just something that was put in to make the car easier to assemble at the factory.

The nut is an extra piece. It should just be the shifter shaft and that's it. Not a bad idea if the boot wasn't staying up on its own. You don't seem to have a polished turd

haha thanks! That’s what I assumed about the nut on the shaft (lol) just some of the wiring on this thing is a little sketchy so I’m just paranoid at times

Use a 1/8” bit and drill three or four holes in a close symmetric pattern on the side of the armrest tray that faces the bulb. It’ll let enough light in to help at night.
