"You're gonna need a rebuild."

Ive forgotten more comments then I remember. However, a couple years back I had an elderly couple park across from me at Lowes when I had my Silver R2 with 99 front end and Kinesis wheels. They were getting out of their new Jaguar 2 door coupe(sorry dont know the model). Old lady walked up and said they used to own one and she rarely sees them on the road.
Me-"Yea, rx7s are few and far between on the roads these days" ( I made a point to say rx7 so she didnt think it was a miata)
Her "Still miss it more than any car we ever owned. We had a Turbo Supra, Turbo 3000GT, and RX7 all we purchased brand new"
Me "Thats awestome. Not many people have owned all those cars, especially new"
Her "The other cars just didnt compare to zipping around in the RX7. We've owned about every sports car on the road and nothing has ever been as fun to drive"
Her Husband in typical old man voice- "Yea, she loved that car and still talks about it. Biggest piece of **** we ever owned though and sold it about a year after the warranty ran out"
Me"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH"
That conversation will always stick with me. The driving experience of a near stock FD is legendary. The maintenance of a near stock FD is also legendary in its own right.

I love threads like these.
First week of ownership as I was pulling out of the driveway, random guy walking by asks "That's a nice car! What kind of car is it?".
Washing my car: 3 Old ladies in their 60s-70s kept staring at it as they were walking by.
And the usual wife stuff: "This car stinks!" "How do I get out of this car?" "What! You bought a car without AC?" "You spend more time fixing your car than driving it!"

Where in the bay area are you from?
"You're car is a piece of ****, i'll buy it for $1k"
"Nice C5 corvette, what conversion is your tail lights?"
"Nice firebird, why does it sound so wimpy?"
"When's the last time you put oil in your car?"
"Do you got NOS on it?"
Most of the time i take it out, people just wave or give me a thumbs up.
what people said about my rx8....
"Nice Ferrari, what model is that?"
"Nice altezza lights you ricer"
guy: pulls up in a scion "you're car sucks, my fd can beat it"
me: "wheres your FD at?"
guy: "its in my garage, blown motor..."
me: "...."
guy: "Nice suicide doors, copied off a saturn ion redline"
me: "i have it on both sides of the car though...."
"could i hug your car? it will hug me back" (reference to old commercial)

seems like our cars get confused with vipers, corvettes and miatas.
There was a bunch of high end cars driving out of a parking lot from a meet and one person goes......WTF is that POS crossfire doing with those cars as it pulls out. I didn't have the heart to tell him it was a Mercedes SLR. I do have to admit, it did look like a crossfire.

I was surprised that nobody has ever confused the FD with a Ford Probe or Mazda MX-6. I guess they're too old and rare to be a common reference.

There are a couple FDs and an FB in my area so it's mostly just thumbs up and waves.

They are family, like the Miata. Or were you embarrassed to be in a MR2

When I stopped by a gas station on my way to work I parked next to a 350z with some really gaudy wheels on it. When I came back the z owner was looking at the fd and said, I had to find out what this was it looks cool. Then some guy at the pumps yells out, Tom, that's an rx8.
Then last weekend in Monterey I took the fd on 17 mile drive. When I stopped at the gaurd shack the guy gets out and says, nice car. I really like these. It's a Miata rite? I just say back yah kinda it's just a bigger version. Then he says, yah it's a lot better.

I occasionally frequent the standing Saturday night car show at the Scottsdale Pavillions. It's always funny to see people check out the engine bay, then look at the interior, and finally work their way to the back of the car only to see them mouth the word "MAZDA?, Wow"
Here are a few others.
Guy comes up to me at the same show and says he's owned several vettes and always wanted one of these instead. He said "I can't believe Corvette copied the bubble top roof from this car"
Younger drivers always come up to be after checking out the car and say "thank you so much for not going LS"
Finally, back around 2005, I was driving out from the same show on a different Saturday evening and a father and young boy (5-ish) noticed my car and the boy excitedly said "Look Daddy, Red Suns, RED SUNS!!" I thought that was one of the best!

Most of my experience are positive as a lot of people seem to know about the rotary sports cars from Mazda. A lot of people will walk a long distance just to take a peek at my car. Last time my clutch slave cylinder went out and I was stranded in the middle of an intersection. I was surprised that a lot of people (including 2 cops) offered help to me which I really appreciated. The worst experience was when I first bought the car and brought it for smog check, a guy asked me "What's this? It looks like it copies from the camaro (he referred to the 4th gen.)" I was like "..."
