There are two cars worth owning the GT3 and the FD

The cayman GT4 may be a keeper if it doesn't blow up or break down like all the other caymans.

2002: Picked up my first FD and wish I never sold it.

2004: Sold the FD and picked up a 350Z...was twin turbo for 60k miles and a great car but didn't compare to the FD.

2007: Sold the 350Z and picked up my currect FD which I haven't driven in a good while now...this year is the year though.

2008: Picked up an 83 RX-7 GSL...loved that thing, but it was a beater from day 1 and sold it in 2013.

2009: Picked up a '92 NSX...great car and while I constantly think of cars to sell it for I don't ever really come up with anything.

Future (probably 2 years down the road): Either sell the NSX and pick up a R35 GT-R or keep the NSX and add an R32 GT-R to the stable. My thoughts on which I would rather do change daily.

I can't imagine not having an FD in the garage and hope that day never comes.

Sold my euro spec '03 Elise to get my FD. Miss the Elise but happy with the switch. My Daily is an '05 STI. All silver of course. Been thinking about a 911 Turbo but the prices are scary.

usually a problem on track. Most anyone who has tracked their cayman for any length of time has lost an engine or fixed the issue 1st.

I look at any sports car I'm interested in for track use and like the FD the cayman needs a lot of work to keep it running on track

Yes, the IMS problem is a known issue with the 987.1 Caymans (2006-08). Eliminated with the 987.2 starting in 2009. The percentage of the 06-08 cars affected by this is not readily known, but when it fails your engine is trashed. I don't track my cars so our criteria are different, although I certainly appreciate your perspective, Fritz. Generally speaking, as street-driven cars the Caymans have been quite reliable.

After 12 years and three fully built FDs, I got into AMGs. First a 2006 SLK55 with headers and the performance brakes and lsd. It was fun hell and well balanced. The brakes were amazing...

With my kids I wanted some fun cars that I can tote them around in... So my daily is a 2014 CLA45 (the PERFECT daily imo) and my ongoing project is a 560hp 2004 E55.

I remember when I first bought my FD in 99 and you were still living in an apartment with your girlfriend. I was buying car parts from you and you had just started the forum. Time flies.

As far as cars
I've been in and out of the FD for decades. I'm on my 3rd one.
Other cars and bikes are cool but the FD always has a place. It's nostalgic for me now.

What qualifies for "Old Time Members?"

My progression so far:

86 300zx-junkyard (highschool)
88 FC na- junkyard (highschool)
87 FC TII - sold to Mom (highschool)
04 M3 - sold (post college)
99 miata - sold
94 FD - still have
02 M3 - PITA daily

I've been going back and forth between the FD and e46 M3 and finally realized that they have two completely different driving experiences to offer and wanted both.

FD is more fun to drive, M3 takes a lot less effort at the limit.

Ive had the good fortune of owning and driving a lot of different performance cars. The FD still gives me the best experience when I want to go out and have fun the rare occasion I don't have one of the kids with me. Since I bought my first one in 2002 I always keep coming back to the FD.

The biggest issue I run into with any FD I own is finding a happy medium between performance and comfort/driveability.

Either way the few cars I have really enjoyed besides the FD are:
1. 2005 Campagna T-Rex-Expensive, Impractical and insanely dangerous. With that said its an absolute riot every time you drive it.

2. Vipers-Not owned one but have a decent bit of seat time in several of them. Similar to the FD in a lot of ways and is a very raw car.

3. Current 94 6 speed Supra with small single turbo. Responsive, fast, handles well and my wife doesnt complain when she rides in it. It is a great car, not quite the bulletproof no issue car the fan bois deem it to be but very impressive quality for its age.

4. 996 Turbo 911- Havent gotten to drive a 997 turbo yet but will likely be my next car when I sell the Supra. Was impressed with the 996 all around. Power with comfort and not loud. Rear engine and AWD I dont love for playing on the street but it makes the top 5.

5. E55/CLS55 AMG-Without kids I would never go this route but my E55 made 490/540 at the wheels and looked pretty good with the E63 front bumper and larger wheels. Handling was lackluster compared to the M5s Ive driven but the E55 is also way less finicky when it comes to reliability.

6. C5/C6/C7 vettes, great cars all around but they are corvettes. Enjoyed the ones Ive driven but dont see me owning one unless I found the deal of deals on a C6Z.

I still have my FD that I bought in 2000, and the STi I bought on 2003. I've really enjoyed owning that combo.

Awesome User Name! But don't put the sti in the same sentence as the FD or I take it back haha.

My first car was an 85. I lost it 6 months later due to emmissions control laws. they were so strict that it was almost impossible for a used 7 to pass.

on Jan 1st of 2015, those laws expired, and the first thing I did was buy a street ported FD!

I'll only list my 'fun' cars in order
-93 BB RX7
-04 Audi S4- kids came and made a panic purchase, good car but heavy!
-05 E55 AMG- best DD, reliable, fast but handled like a pig.. German Muscle Car
-01 911 TT- Awesome car but instead of nickel and dimes, it was thousands and thousands
-94 SSM RX7- back to my FD. Aside from the constant rattles, my favorite car

This said, my best friend from High School is a GM of a huge Acura dealer in NorCal and I'm on the list for an NSX when they get one. I'll decide 'then' but not giving up my place in line until I drive it. I'll still keep the FD, I won't sell again, these cars are too fun and finding a good one is getting really hard

other than RX-7's i have had a few GC imprezas. I still have my FD, but if I had to choose between the two, i would go with an impreza with a wrx/sti swap.. they are just more comfortable and easier to drive. although you cant beat the fun of driving an rx-7 on a track, ive tracked an impreza and its just not the same

Yep sti, evo etc... drive themselves. Similar to a 911 if you learn to drive the FD beyond the limit it will reward you big time but be prepared to go off the track a few times LOL.

The sports cars I've owned in order of driving experience or fun factor:
FD
997.1 GT3 RS
997.1 GT3
996 GT3
Cayman
S2K
300 ZX
280 Z

2008 335i. Surprisingly fast and handles great yet is very comfortable. I think Bmw makes a great car. Doesn't rev as freely in the upper rpms though.

Yep bimmers make great sedans with crazy good/easy to drive chassis setups. I've instructed more students in BMWs than any other car and it's always a pleasure.

Each time I test drive one though I can't get past the lazy feel/weight

The old school guys seemed to go out in waves with new car introductions.

There where:

C5 corvette
Elise
M Coupes (I thought about it)
Boxster/Cayman

There's a big difference between a race car and a new sports car. I think many of us drive pretty extreme track cars.

So on one side I don't think it's fair that we are measuring the fun factor of our fds vs stock sports cars.

I have problem with holding onto things I buy.

1998 Jeep TJ
1985 Defender 90 RHD
1989 Defender 110 RHD
2006 Mini Cooper
2001 Land Rover Disco 2
1994 FD with 36K miles

FD is a fun car. Can't stand boring sedans and never owned one.

What made the FD trump all of the GT3 variants?

Is it the weight?
