What Car Did Old Time Members Switch To?

I'm wondering what type of cars guys who were in the FD game from the beginning ended up transitioning to?

Of course they may not be on the boards any more so others may chime in for them.

I have had 15 cars and 4 of them FDs first one in 2002. Can't seem to find another car I enjoy more and would like to hear if there's anything I should be aiming for.

I had my first FC Turbo II in 1997? 98? First FD in 1999. Loved it.

Sold that and got a 350Z new off the lot. Hated it.

Sold that and got an Evo VIII. Loved it.

Sold that and got an S2000. Meh.

Sold that and got another FD. Loved it.

Sold that and got a supercharged E92 M3. Awesome car.

Sold that and got another FD. Work in progress.

I had a few other cars in the mix there... S13, S14, Nissan Xterra, FJ Cruiser, 4Runner... just always came back to the FD. Strange gravity it has.

For the money, the FD is your best choice. I have owned rx7s since the mid 80s. I'll be 60 this year and I have one of each gen. I will never sell my fd.

first 93 fd in 2003.
sold it for a 94 in 2004 (current car)

had a new 350z in 04 and 07...didnt really care for either but they made a decent daily.

sold the 07 z and got a 04 mazdaspeed miata for a daily now which is pretty fun.

Pretty funny. I'm a couple years ahead of you all around. Will be 62 this year; first was an 82 GSL; 88 GXL; 93 FD (drove it off the lot new and still have it). There just isn't much out there that can run with the FD considering price, styling, classic lines (I guess that's styling. . .), performance etc. I've thought about a corvette, but meh. . .it's just a very different kind of car.

Bought my first fd in 99. I've had 4 running fds total, all ranging from bolt ons to fully built single turbo cars. At 6'1" 250 I don't fit in these cars well anymore. I moved on to a 500 whp 03 cobra, then a Grand Cherokee srt8. Currently I have an Audi S6 V10 as a daily driver and a fully build Evo X for fun.

Went from my FD (had for 7 years, loved it) to a 99 Viper GTS (loved it), then a Gallardo (hated it) and now a LP640 which I don't think I'll ever sell. Contemplating adding a NSX for a track car. Also probably will add a M6 GC or Cayenne as a replacement for my current daily driver relatively soon.

Still think for the price, the FD can't be beat.

What was the issue with the Gallardo? The LP 640 is the Murciallago? Why is that so much better?

Thinking of another FD?

I've owned almost nothing but FCs and FDs since 2002. I now have a 10thAE, a BB 93 touring and a 2011 Mazdaspeed3. I might be picking up a GSL-SE to round out the 7 collection.

If I was going to switch it up to 'graduate' from the FD...I'd probably be looking at a 996 or 997 GT3.

More or less in order....

1988 Turbo II FC bought in 2002-ish -- Sold in 2004
1981 Jeep CJ-7 in bought in 2003-ish -- Still have today for off-road fun
1991 Mitsubishi Galant VR4 in 2004-ish sold to help fund FD
1989 FC N/A in bought in 2004-ish -- R&R motor then sold
1994 FD3S - RX-7 in late 2004 - Sold in late 2006
1992 Toyota Pickup -- Still have today for off-road fun
1981 DMC DeLorean -- Still have today.
1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Still have today / was daily driver
1994 Honda Accord - Still have today / is daily driver
1994 FD3S - RX-7- bought a few weeks ago... I bought my same 94 FD3S back haha

I likely mixed up years maybe for purchases but overall gives the idea..I used to have too much free time and enjoyed buying projects, fixing, selling for a loss and starting over.

I think for a lot of people there wasn't really an evolution. I mean, I had an FC but didn't trade it for an FD, it was 2000 when I got my FD (had to get rid of an ex-wife, lol!), and it was just...another car...for me. One I'd wanted since they came out, and when I was able to, I bought one.
Frankly, it satisfies every need I have when it comes to high(er) performance cars. Every time I drive it, it puts a smile on my face.

I'd love to have a new Jaguar F-Type or Nissan GT-R...those two cars are seriously the only ones I really pine for...what I would go buy immediately upon winning the Lottery. Well of course I'd have to find a great Series 1 XKE, too...lol!
I really have no desire for a Ferrari or Lambo or other exotic.

I've recently been travelling on business, literally coast-to-coast. L.A. and NY. It just cracks me up to see all the high-end exotics putting along at 15 mph...right with the $12,999 Nissan Versa alongside it. The U.S. is becoming very unfriendly, at least in the larger metropolitan areas, to high performance cars.

Not a long time member but I have love/hate with some of the same cars listed

2002 Sentra SER Spec-V - Loved it torque steer generator under the hood - Lost to Katrina in Biloxi
2014 5.0 Auto - Bought new - Got it dyno tuned - Loved it - Sold it for what we owed
2015 STI - Bought in lieu of said sold Mustang - Wife owned it long enough to love it and had to sell due to pregnancy
2005 F150 V6 5spd - DD, bought new - never underestimate the value of a pickup
2014 Charger RT - Trade in sale from STI - Wife's DD and baby hauler
2013 Focus ST - 407whp weekend destroyer - My toy
1993 FD3S - Wifes money pit - Curent WIP

To the OP, get a Focus ST. It's a great DD, FMIC/CB/Cobb AP custom tune and you will have a 260-280 whp haul *** toy.

1986 GX - 1995 - 1998 [reliable but slow. got me hooked on rotaries]
1989 Turbo II (cymfc3s) - 1998 - 2008 [My high school sweetheart. Was one of the first to do a near frame-off restoration of an FC. Was customer of the month at Menlo Mazda at least once. I miss her.]
1989 Turbo II (black 13BRE) - 2002 - 2004 [Fun car, wish I had more time resources to make the cosmo motor swap that much better. Sold it to help pay rent when I moved to Arizona]
2003 Frog-eye WRX - 2003 - 2009 [First subaru. Made sense: weird engine, top mount intercooler and hood scoop]
2008 WRB STi - 2009 - 2014 [2nd subaru. One of the best cars I've ever owned. Drove this car hard, nothing ever broke on it. One of the better vehicle investments I've made too. Bought for 32k, sold for 26.5k with 65,000 on the clock]
2014 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 Double Cab TRD - 2014 - Present [Sold the STi to buy the truck. Great truck, but missed the STi]
2001 Toyota 4Runner SR5 - 2014- Present [Inherited from family member. Was never maintained, barely ran. Spent 3+ mos fixing this truck. Its a good thing 4Runner's are tough, because its the only reason this truck is still on the road. Now its the daily driver]
1994 RX-7 R2 - 2015 - Present [Was not looking, but this car found me. Really looking forward to driving, wrenching and owning my new 7]

Are you looking for another new 2 seat sports car? A Cayman or a new Alfa would be at the top of my list.

Bang for the buck though, it's tough to beat the FD...For FD prices, maybe a really nice MSM or S2k something.

Jason what's up! I also had a supercharged Vette making about 550rwhp, it was a sweet car. There are 3 factors that come to mind that still draw me to the FD over a SC Vette.
The lighter weight, the rarity, and I enjoy driving turbos so much more than superchargers.

Depends on the model and options. You can ring up $50k in Porsche options very easily but you can expect to be in the $70-85k range for a decent new Cayman.

Alfa Romero 4C

I'm assuming MSM is the new Miata.

srry bout that.
Mazdaspeed Miata and the new Alfa Romeo 4C, which directly competes with the Cayman. The Porsche goes for around 50k new and 1/2 that used. Probably won't find a used Alfa though as they're brand new.

Alfa Romeo 4C:
