Suspiciously clean tail pipe after new ecu

1996 FD Rx7, 90,000km, stock engine bay.

Jus had new apexi FC ecu fitted by a reputable roto engine specialist, dyno tuned to 250 rwhp, mainly because the engines got a few miles on it and didn't want to strain it too much.

Have just done about 100km in it, all on the track, all WOT, on the redline, runs great, happy as.

Get home and glanced at the tail pipe, and I'm looking at the cleanest tail pipe I've ever seen

I run 98 octane gas with a tiny bit of 2 stroke as the oil pump is running as originally set.

I'm still coming to terms with the FC hand controller cos my manual is in Japanese, but looking at the pic of the tail pipe, does that look like its leaning out? or is this just a result of high rev track driving? when it has the old ecu it was still black in the pipe after the same sessions.

Thanks

That is indeed odd. Do you have AFR readings from the dyno session?

Heres the dyno sheet with the AFR specs, I thought it looked quite good at 11.5, but I'm no expert

Cheers

11.5 AFRs are a bit leaner than I've heard most people here in the US tuning to. Most tuning discussions here in the US seem to put target AFRs at 11.0 under boost iirc.

You won't really know unless you have a proper wideband O2 fitted in your downpipe mate

That does look pretty damn clean for a tracked turbo rotary though.

Pull the plugs and show them to the group. That would be a better indicator than tail pipe.

11.5 is lean by my standards. We tune to 10.9: to 11.1. I also like at least 8-10 oz or premix WITH a working omp, ESPECIALLY when dynoing or racing the car.

Why is there a trademe logo on the dyno graph image?

If I had to guess - I would guess you just bought the car like this and are suspect about the lean-ness/tuning after your track run. Perhaps that dyno graph is from the "for sale add" ?

If that's the case, I would take that dyno graph with a pinch of salt and get it checked.
Also the paper covering up some info would be suspect to me (unless you put it there yourself to protect your info). but I don't think that's the case due to the trademe watermark. odd.

To me that would suggest that they are covering up the date etc of the tuning or maybe other info. Like its not even from your car. Only throwing ideas out there. That trademe dyno graph is suspect though. Suggests you did not get it tuned yourself, so really have no idea re the state of tune. If you got it tuned yourself why would there be a trademe watermark there? Does not add up.

I use the trademe site to host my pictures, and they put a watermark on it, but its a lot easier than ******** around with facebucket or whatever, and I can get a good picture up quickly.

For example you can see the same here on my posting on 911UK 911uk.com - Porsche Forum, Specialist, Insurance, Car For Sale, Finance, Parts & Service : View topic - 3.2 1988 G50 coupe NZ to UK...viable? see the watermark in the corner. My FD is in the shed to the right of the Range Rover. Can take pic with the garage door open, if people are going to have a sleepless night wondering if I actually have one

But top marks for observation!

Was on the track last weekend, still clean pipe, going extremely well, can't fault it.

Will pull the plugs, that's a good idea and the wideband 02 as well, but that will have to wait until the stag hunting season is over as I'm busy sorting out gear, guns, heli bookings etc, but that will be all over by mid april and then back on the cars.

Another point that I forgot, is it still has its cat in place, I wonder if that is cleaning the emissions to give that lean pipe look?

Cheers

^oh yea makes sense.
I think a cat would indeed get rid of some of the blackness.
I would remove it..who needs cats =D

Definetely the cat and the slightly lean tune keep your tailpipe clean. Also you havent done so many kms . Although the sparkplugs are a good thing to check for answers on whether you are lean or not , i would buy a wieeband gauge/sensor! Its a must for every sports car and especialy for a rotary engined one!
