Social media killed the forums.
I find forums to be a great source of information and experience. There is lots of good information on forums as long as you're ready to spend the time to look for it. Most people are too lazy to read for a few hours so they neglect forums.
Facebook is for Farmville, stancers that thumbs up slammed & cambered cards, and people posting how MAD TYTE they think something is.
Youtube has good information on it but a 10 minute video usually doesn't convey all the information that you need. Also, the majority of big review channels are sponsored (in some way) by large companies and have biased suggestions (at least in my field). Youtube is also 90% click bait now. People just want dem utubes monies.

I use FB chat to talk to a few rx7 guys that are still around.

I FB only to stay in touch with relatives and friends. 'Like' and leave. Rarely comment. Still prefer the forum for it's search function and FAQs. I'm still reading/re-reading them after all these years.
I use both FB and the forums. The forums is still my main source of information hands down. The FB groups are filled with too much FS threads that even when you ask a question, don't bother expecting an answer. Social media did not kill the forums, it was only a quick and convenient way of browsing, I think the forums are more active due to the information provided. There may be more lurkers than posters.

I use both. Unfortunately I do use Facebook more because it's easier for me to make a post and get answers from being friends with a lot of rotary people, but I am trying to get on the forums more for more of a source of information. I also am not great with forums (layout, how to use) as I never really got a chance to get used to them but I'm going to start to try to come on here everyday and get some "forum time" hahaha.
I absolutely hate social media and don't understand the pros of using it for information over a forum. How do you use Facebook as a repository for expert knowledge? On this forum, you can search for great DIYs and debates about all sorts of technical stuff all the way back to 2000. How does FB replace that?
I can't help but remark how dead the forum seems compared to back in the early 2000s. You had a crapload of expert information and help available and updated in real time. Now we have only a handful of the old timers around. The lounge use to be an endless string of crazy stuff and

I ended up deleting my facebook account years ago, it just made me less happy as a person.
These forums are a fantastic resource, though the entry requirements may be turning a lot of newer members away from actually posting. That's not to say they're a bad idea, but it's something to consider when evaluating the long term health of a declining community (if it is actually declining).

I had facebook for a year and deleted it. It caused too many problems with gf's and other people getting jealous, etc. I cannot control what other people put on my facebook. Much easier lifestyle without having all the drama IMO.
Unless someone hacks our forum, it is and always will be the "rx7 bible" of information. You can easily go back and read threads from 15 years ago that have amazing useful info.
The forum might not be as active as before, but its value is still paramount.
FB is ok for maybe getting a quick response, and looking at some photos...but its not a good platform for storing usefull info.
If this forum dissapeared...I would fall into a deep depression and just give up on life...true story

Nothing beats the collective knowledge that is stored in this forum. Im a new fd owner and I've been bringing the car back to life after sitting for 4 years. Any information I've needed to troubleshoot problems has been found on this forum or from links found on this forum.
I even still read Rob Robinette's RX7 FAQ even after all this time. Some of it is out of date, but I still find it a good primer for people coming back into the rotary game after being away for a while or new owners. That site's been around for close to 20 years now!
the car is getting old and there weren't many sold in the first place. Go on the Subaru forums or new Mustang forums and you will see tons of users and lots of paying vendors.
and if you are under 25 you probably barely use Facebook and use instagram and snapchat much more

As long as I own a Rx7, I will always come on the forum. It's where I met many people who share the same passion as me, I get deals on parts and the most important, the knowledge of the forum

What were the early days of the forum like? Did it originate from a newsgroup or something older? I love to hear about stuff like this - the growth and evolution of an online community and what not.
