If this article has any truth to it I really hope it doesn't get made. The RX-7 is supposed to compete with Japans best not be downgraded to the likes of the FRS. If Mazda can no longer compete in a class this car deserves that's fine, but don't tarnish the legacy the 7 has already established.

MSRP of a '93 base: $32,000
In today's dollars: $51,000
If the RX-7 is priced the same as it was, that means that it would be competing price-wise with the following "sports" cars:
Corvette
335i
Z4
Shelby GT500
Challenger SRT8
Camaro ZL1
S4
S5
TTS (Or even a TT-RS after discounts)
Cayman
SLK
And probably a few others. Toyota's got it's Supra coming out, and likely an MR2 as well. There's rumors of a 240Z revival. Who knows, Nissan may decide to compete in this arena as well. I doubt Mitsubishi will revive the 3000GT, but it's a possibility.
With the base model 'Vette being such a good deal, Mazda's going to have to pull something out of their rear to really seat themselves in the market. Most folks who can afford a $50K car aren't looking for a "Jap Trap". They want German, or they want American. Of course, these are the old farts of today. Who knows what the old farts of tomorrow will want!
As for me, well... Let's just say I've got a few grand in the RX7 account so far, and a couple years to bring that number up!

I see the future rx7 being priced not too much higher than the last fd. Remember this will be na and cheaper to produce. Mazda knows they can't go too heavy on price considering the poor reliability rep the rx8 left us. Also, this car could very well be here sooner than you think. Newer models always come out a few months before the actual new year hit. So we could very well be seeing these in show rooms in early fall of 2016. 2013's came out months ago and it's still 2012.

Corvette - Cheap Fast and Brash. 'Merica!
335i - Complex and brutal. Refined and expensive to maintain. Douches
Z4 - See above only with a lot less trunk space.
Shelby GT500 - Holy **** who needs that power? Ford and Retro-style lovers.
Camaro ZL1 - "I'm sorry I backed into you ma'am. I swear I couldn't see you and the throttle is very touchy." Chevy Lovers
Challenger SRT8 - Heavy and cool. More mature of the muscle cars.
S4 - "I live in the snow belt so I need AWD. Also I hate BMW."
S5 - See above except without friends or kids.
TTS - See above only exept female.
Cayman - Incredible car. Still not a 911 though. "Don't call it a Boxster!"
SLK - Classy and sleek. Female favored because tries to be always in the middle and not super special.
I imagine the Rx-9 would be something like:
RX-9 - "OMG racecar!" "No its not a 4 cylinder"

My dream is that Mazda makes two rotary powered vehicles. Rx7 of course and bring back a 3 rotor Cosmo sport sedan. Mazda really needs aluxury sports sedan condender. I dont think this is too far fetched. If this new cat technology works as well as Mazda claims it will, then the rotary could easy live in multiple platforms once again.

Interesting though, I'd definitely get myself one if it looks somewhat close to this with rotary under the hood.

This isn't an actual Mazda concept. This is a shortened photoshoped version of the 4 door Shinari concept from 2010.

I just was wowed by what this guy was able to create and thought to myself..Mazda needs to hire this guy and build that **** as is!

just buy an FD. a next gen wont make you happy. the FRS would be a good market place for the rx7. the FD was never a supercar. Mazda already has a flagship super(race lol) car its the 787. The RX8 is an awesome car and they race it.
i agree with Mazda's SkyActiv business strategy.
by 2017, I'll be buying a used FRS with power mods on the cheap. or ill just put a 13BTT in it

The blue car looks the best in my opinion. It looks light and quick but not brute force. Anybody remember "lighting in a world of thunder?" Mazda will stick with that approach.
A future RX-7 will be relatively inexpensive and probably start around 35k. The high cost is a large reason the FD, 300zx, Supra left the market. The only reason the 3000GT lasted so long is because they had FWD, n/a version. Mazda needs to reach the masses more than satisfy those of us wanting a GTR or Z06 competitor. The FD was possible because Mazda sold many many thousands of FB, FC and Miata. Ultimately they need to sell a lot of them whether it's called the RX-7 or RX-9. If they try to compete with current supercars we'll have another expensive, low volume, misunderstood car with a 3-4 year production run. It will be simple, light, and pure. N/A saves some big money. I would expect it's performance to be close to, the same as or only slightly better than the FD and I would be fine with that. I'd gladly pay 40k for a new, good looking, simplified, safe rotary sports car. The FD performance is still excellent.

mmm this indeed looks sexy. This represent a shorter version of the vette! The lines also somewhat look like the new camaro @ the rear quarter panel area.
Interesting though, I'd definitely get myself one if it looks somewhat close to this with rotary under the hood.
