Diego, you'll be refunded a chunk of money to have someone else handle the rest of your work. I wish you the best of luck.

I feel as if this could have been resolved better and don't wish to have my business associated with you. There are plenty of options out there.

If you need help in your new state of Texas, Maple Racing is a phenomenal shop with top tier communication skills.

I'm out. Sorry you guys dealt with this.
it’s a stand up thing for you to try and help people without expecting or looking for anything in return. It’s very selfless and commendable. To play the devil’s advocate though, if RPM had great customer service and communication you wouldn’t have to be here putting out Mike’s fires.

I was getting ready to bring my car to RPM to finish the last like 2% of my build (nut and bolt check, fuel line check and first start/break in) and I'm just gonna do it all myself smh. Can't trust ANY of these shops.....

Agreed! My car is basically done, but I need a shop that I CAN TRUST with a dyno to help me finish tuning it beyond WG spring levels. I've done all the tuning to date myself (Link G4+ ECU), but it would be nice to have a pro review my work and help me optimize the tune, especially for the upper end where I need to get on a dyno to tune it consistently & safely - DIY road tuning has been a challenge because I either run out of road or risk getting arrested tuning just up to WG spring boost levels. Anyway, I live in MD and RPM is about 2-1/2 hours from me, IRP is about the same distance, and I won't be going to either place because of all the horror stories I'm reading here and on FB.

I hear you. Have patience. You will find a way. It's better figure it out than rushing to a shop that can set you back. I'm there.....
My suggestion is that if you were willing to drive 2.5 hrs, then find a place even if further away that you have distance available where a remote tuner can help. Road track, drag strip back road?
Good luck!

Hey Pete, so it looks like the complaints of RPM are largely against Mike, the mechanical work, and shop communication/practices. The tuner for RPM isn't actually employed directly by RPM, he's out of Los Angeles and has his own gig. I believe the relationship is that RPM uses him exclusively, but he doesn't work exclusively with/for them.

I've spoken offline to Ryan pretty extensively about my own build and expectations. He seems pretty clued in and is far less abrasive to deal with than other builder/tuners we've worked with in the past. He's also had damned good communication with me when I got my pro-jay sniper intake through him. Point being that I wouldn't write off the tuner themself if that's all you need, and everything is mechanically 110% good-to-go.

I've also spoken to Ryan (aka RGTBrain design) about remote tuning offline and in person at the last DGRR, and agree he's very knowledgeable and seems really good at the communications/customer relations side of the business, and he would probably be my go-to guy for that service. At DGRR he advised me to save my cash for now, keep doing what I've been doing with the road tuning, and come to him only if reach the point where I'm stumped or feel I really need to get on a dyno. I'm not stumped yet, but I really need a dyno to get to the end state. I realize that if I went that route Ryan would be the tuner, doing 98% of the work, but I still wouldn't trust whoever at RPM will be physically doing the remaining 2% of the work by strapping down my FD and operating the dyno & doing the pulls for Ryan - lots of room for error and major F-ups in there if the RPM guy fails to follow Ryan's directions.

I still may end up working with Ryan, but it would be with a different shop/dyno facility. I found a really good shop in Forest Hill, MD that does all things motorsports except tune rotaries - Agile Automotive, https://agileauto.com/ I had them do the wheel alignment on my FD after I installed a set of Tein Flex-Z coilovers. I had a great experience with them for that job, and the techs there are thorough and really know their stuff. Guy that did my alignment pointed out an issue where one of my A/C hoses would intermittently rub the PS/AC belt when the AC was running, and saved me from having to do a more extensive repair (I just had to adjust the belt tension a smidge tighter, and tweak the hose clamps a bit to reposition the hose a bit)

Anyway, I chatted with the owner about renting his dyno for remote tuners. He's done that before with pro race teams (i.e., his high $$$ customers) that insist on using their tuner instead of his in-house tuners, and he was open to the idea of letting someone like Ryan tune rotaries for customers there on a case-by-case basis. The issue will be dyno time & availability - it is heavily utilized as-is, and even though they are located in an industrial park, local code enforcement prevents them from doing loud stuff like dyno pulls after hours. So scheduling dyno time there will be a challenge, as a remote tuner job like mine isn't among one of their high priority/high $ customers, so it will be the lowest priority for scheduling.

I will be in the same predicament as you. I am looking at Ryan helping me with my first start up remotely/dial things in for break in miles. Seems like he knows what he's doing. I will need a dyno as well once break in is completed. Probably will be tough getting a dyno spot at Agile, maybe they would be more willing to do a rotary group dyno session?....idk.

Yeah, I know. He was also getting dog piled on by people (some who are legitimately upset, some who were being opportunists) about stuff outside of his direct control.

The main thing I'd be concerned about are time constraints. The process of thoroughly and correctly building a map takes time, don't be surprised if it takes 6-8 hours or more. Per vehicle.

The old practice of flying a tuner in and getting 10 cars tuned in a weekend only really works for cookie-cutter applications and older tech resolution levels. Doing it right to take full advantage of modern tech available at even the club/hobbiest level takes time.

I'll use my build plan as an example: When my FD is ready for its initial start my tuner will be there. Once the basic leak checks are good it'll go on the dyno, for 8 hours. That be spent doing initial setups, calibrations, programming, etc. I'll try to squeeze a dyno break-in (per mazda instruction) in there too. The actual tuning for power won't start until the second day, and it'll take the entire day.

This time requirement isn't because my tuner is learning as he goes, they have been tuning at the professional motorsports level for decades, it's because they go line-by-line to ensure everything is ideal and safe.

A quick 2-3 hour session will get you surface level coverage, but that's about it.

Hey Pete, I'm in Forest Hill, like less than a mile from Agile. It's a proper race shop, but bummer that they don't work on or tune rotaries (they are "subi-bros"). I will be taking mine for alignment and maybe bushing/pillow ball swaps and hubs.

Looks like RPM deleted their Instagram....or they blocked me lol. Came across another build (FC w/ RPM built 20B) that didn't even last 800 miles before eating up bearings. YIKES.

Punitive and Compensatory Damages

Definitely worth considering if any action is taken by me or a group of us.

pu·ni·tive damages

/ˈpyo͞onədiv ˈdamijiz/
Learn to pronounce
noun
Law

plural noun: punitive damages; plural noun: punitory damages
damages exceeding simple compensation and awarded to punish the defendant.

What are examples of punitive damages?
Individuals can also be ordered to pay punitive damages that injure someone else due to negligent behavior. Examples of this would be drunk driving or distracted driving. In both cases, the defendant would have made a conscious decision to engage in behavior that could easily harm another person.

What are punitive damages Meaning?
Punitive damages are awarded in addition to actual damages in certain circumstances. Punitive damages are considered punishment and are typically awarded at the court's discretion when the defendant's behavior is found to be especially harmful.

What's the difference between punitive and compensatory damages?
The purpose of compensatory damages is to place the injured party (plaintiff) in the same position monetarily as if the injury had never occurred, and punitive damages are awarded to punish the defendant (at-fault party).

Compensatory And Punitive Damages

 • The compensatory damages awarded to plaintiffs are designed to give justice to them after being wronged.
 • Punitive damages are designed to prevent others from being hurt by the same or similar actions.
If someone’s behavior or actions were negligent, you have the right to file a lawsuit to pursue damages for your injuries or losses. You might be wondering how much your case might be worth. This isn’t always so easy to determine in the beginning because all of the facts need to be gathered, current and future effects of the injuries are assessed, and how the negligence affects the quality of life in the future. and a legal case is built. For instance, the averages in personal injury settlement in a car accident will vary on a variety of factors, discussed in our post on average car accident settlements.
“Before you file, it’s important to consult with an attorney who can review the circumstances, evidence, and any other important information. If you have suffered a personal injury, wrongful death, or other types of damages, the compassionate personal injury attorneys at O’Dwyer & Bernstien will help you receive the justice, and closure, you deserve.”

The turbo parts returned to us is not from our turbo also we have not gotten back the transmission and the clutch that you guys claim to change. The car is smoking excessively and couldn't turn steering after taking it half block had to turn around. You were paid in full and the car does not work. This is in proof of videos and texts I will be posting it all for everyone to see. Facts no words just facts !!!No numbers match anything that was returned that we bought. As you see in this post people noticed the oil seals were failing and this was not addressed. How did you street tune the car if you can't turn the wheel. Also took my car to the car show with out my permission. All my evidence is included.this is just a few things I have lots more that I can give if contacted

Desired Outcome

I need my car to work for the money that was paid in full.

Took my car on 02/14/20 for engine changes. Have paid over $25K as "deposits" and the car as of 11/21/20 is still not complete and can't get answers. Short intro-************************************************** *************************************************. I received his car and wanted to carry out his dreams of modifying it. I took the car to Rotors Pistons Motorsportz on 02/17/20. As of 11/21/20 the car is still not complete and I have paid over $25k so far. Not to mention that they have changed the invoicing at least 7 times increasing the cost each time without prior authorization from me. Numerous calls to the owner with no return, constant visits with excises every time. Several complete dates have come and gone. When I took the car I explained there was going to be a road dedication and I wanted the car for that. I was told that was not a problem. The dedication was in Sept. I always here Covid is the excuse. It's not. Numerous cars have come and gone from there. It's to the point that I feel it is a race discrimination item. An employee at the location also agrees that something is not right. If this person has another business in Maryland that is not in good standing how is he allowed to open another? I want my car completed correctly without prejudice and worry that they will tamper with it. If that cannot happen and be guaranteed I want full refund of all monies and the car taken to a shop that can handle the task of completing.

Desired Outcome

I am seeking completion by Nov 30th or a full refund of all monies as they have breeched their own contract and have not completed any of the agreed items.

wow, did he really pull a race card. We are working on the car as fast as we can. unfortunately parts and materials have been very hard to get in a timely manner this year and that is the cause for the delays. as far as phone calls go we have called him back every time he has called us. he has added more items a couple times and thats why his estimate has changed. these where items he wanted extra not on the original estimate. Business owner said a job would be completed by a certain date multiple times but never would complete it and would come up with many excuses as to why even though the bill of the car was full paid up for. Rotor Piston Motorsportz LLC never kept their word and treated the customers very poorly. Product_Or_Service: Full car rebuild and restoration

Desired Outcome

Finish the job Looking to have my car just completed with all the work that was paid for since my car bill for the job is fully paid for since September 2019.

Unfortunately this company did not take any money form this guy. We checked our records that only go back to December first and show no one with that name. Our doors weren't even open for business till 1/1/2020 Thanks Jason RPM

I wanted to share my experiences with dealing with RPM as well. I feel it's important to voice the troubles as many have already in order to expose incompetent and shady practices.

My nightmare started in December of 2020. I started on a quest to locate a shop that can resurrect my FD from 10 years of sitting since I was picking up my life and family out of NY to TX and came across RPM. During my initial conversation with Mike I asked him about the lawsuit that I came across on a review I found. His response was that it was nothing and that the customer had it out for him.... RED FLAG I know. But I gave him the benefit of the doubt. (Regret)
Through speaking with many that were screwed over by him I see that there was in fact many lawsuits. (see pictures)

I also went through the phone tag and no call backs for many weeks at a time. When I did get a response it was excuses after excuses. Covid this covid that. I was told certain parts and then were changed without me knowing until I asked. Customers need to know that their money can be spent better elsewhere.

Whether you drop 2k or 30k (like I did) I believe you will get the same rude and shady treatment. As a business owner myself I can't even imagine treating customers like this and still be in business.

After many months of the progress on the car getting no where I told them that I would be picking up the car in January. So after spending the holidays with family I rented a car and drove down 6 hours from NY to their shop with a flight out of Maryland.

When I get there Mike looks at me and asks why I'm there.. Wtf! He tells me that the car isn't ready. He knew I was making the trip down and he didn't even mention that the car wouldn't be ready. So a waste of time and money. I canceled the transport and flew back home. I was told "just give me a few more months". So I gave them til May.

May rolled around and again I booked everything to make the trip down, this time to take the car no matter if it was done or not.
Even though the car ran that day, it felt that it's was put together without much care. I discovered interior parts damaged, windshield cracked (I was compensated) but now have to deal with the repairs and additional money out of pocket.
Once the car was transported home I noticed that the clutch engages high in the travel. I brought this to Mike's attention and he tells me that it's the clutch master cylinder or pedal adjustment. I put in a new cylinder and SS line bled the system and still the same. Now he keeps telling me to call the office which no one answers. He just doesn't care. He has my money... So now I have to pay to have the transmission removed to have the clutch inspected. Who knows if it's even a new clutch. He said he was going to install an Exedy and he installs a Clutch Master without even telling me.

In addition on a brand new motor are oil leaks on the pan. Which I too have to remove and fix.
I agree with the idea that money should be put into escrow. It's done when you buy a house and should be the practice when shelling out thousands of dollars too to a repair shop. If a shop believes that they are a professional business then they wouldn't have an issue with it. One shouldn't have to fund their business.

I hope this falls across all ears so that this nonsense with shops like RPM will end. If we are smarter consumers were better off in the end. Shops, especially ones that specialize in rotaries survive on the business WE give them.

There is plenty of evidence that Mike Q can do a great job, and takes on just the right job for the right people. How and when he chooses to screw someone over though is a real mystery. I take blame for being the sucker though. Never again.

As another reviewer mentioned. Just do a case search:
casesearch.courts.state.…

Unique Precision Rotary
Rotor Piston Motorsportz
Rotor Piston Motorsports

He also filters facebook comments, so no one can see the BS. Many cases, many judgements, moved several times, changed names, that sounds a lot like theft to me.

I can only imagine the amount of people who didn't go through the pain of going to court. He has an rx7 and rx8 graveyard. Wonder where all those cars come from...

If you happen to already have business with him, be aggressive and stay on him in person until your work gets done.

DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST. I'm not going to say anything bad, but I will summarize my experience and let you make the call. Paid for a 20b motor in full, with a 2 week estimated time of picking up motor from 3rd party seller. 2 weeks turned into 4 months. Each week I had to reach out for updates to see what was going on. I was told many times "this weekend I'm getting it". I was also told many times, seller has money, money in hand, going to pick up motor and each time ended with another excuse. Fast forward 4 months later, it turns out seller sold all of his motors (true story) a couple weeks prior to the 4 month mark and there was no engine. I was told the seller was wired money by RPM to hold motor and through other sources it was found the seller never saw any money, never knew of any motor reservation or planned pick up of 20b motor from RPM shop owner. So what exactly was going on in the 4 month wait time? Your guess is as good as mine. Luckily a refund was agreed upon and it only took 1 month and 3 separate transactions to get my full refund. When contradicting stories were brought to the attention of the owner I was met with the rebuttal "it was just easier to text you that (a lie) instead of explain (the truth)". Keep in mind I ALWAYS called first with no answer followed by a text because voicemail box is full and usually answered with a text message instead of a phone call. That was my experience. I encourage you to reach out to the rx7 community and do your research before choosing an engine builder of any sort not just RPM.

First to Review

IMHO, Mike Q. represents all the worst in the car repair business. My 2 month repair was still not complete after 7+ months. He failed to produce a single receipt for any parts supposedly bought for my car. He disappeared for weeks at a time (i.e., did not return calls/texts/emails). Also, when asked for old parts to be returned (e.g., Mazda Speed/Black Halo add-ons), they could not be found. Spends a lot of time in court (see MD District Court on-line case search). He just set up a new company (Rotor Piston MotorsportZ - with a 'Z' rather than 'S'). Hummm. To avoid additional court actions?. Avoid this business!

This has been the most stressful auto experience we have been through. My roommate has scheduled to get his engine fixed and everything was good. The money ($6k) was transferred to order the parts. Two weeks was the wait time to take the car down and get the repairs done. This was two months ago.Ive emailed and also talked to Mike on the phone as he told me he was waiting to clean the part and was also waiting for another to come. I explained how it wasn't the wait time so much as the lack of communication that was the problem. He proceeded to explain to me, but I told him to please call my roommate and explain it to him. He said he would and has yet to contact him. That was a little over a week ago. This is causing major turmoil at home financially, because we have no idea when the car will be fixed, and the lack of communication is extremely affecting my schedule, because I am responsible to drive him down to pick up his car when it gets fixed, but we are in limbo. Super disappointed. We both continue to call even though they've answered twice saying "can we call you back", or the phone line is busy. I’m confused at the great reviews because this experience is nothing like it unfortunately. Service: Engine repair

Typical Og sob Story Over Promising and not getting what was expected. Hide and seek games mixed with hack like quality would've been better off with a craigslist mechanic from Tennessee.

From RPM’s Facebook Page

You should probably let your customers know that quality builds really aren’t your thing and they might have to wait years for a motor that will be unbalanced. Oh yeah and that you might pretend to give them a certain motor so you can charge them extra but when it messes up and you have to pull everything off you discover this “business” screwed you out of even more money.

Alright guys strap in for my bitchassness rant. Almost a year ago (August 13,2019) I commissioned Rotor Piston Motorsportz LLC to build me a 3 rotor semi peripheral 20b for my fc rx7. This motor was the holy grail for my car. The epitome of rotary engines IMO. He originally told me it'd be a roughly 30 day build from tear down to completion, so I wired him a little over $20k for this. Engine, exhaust manifold, modified Xcessive intake, and a billet S480 he had from a previous build he had. Took him roughly a month to acquire the engine, which is understandable. So I expected it to be done around October.

Then his deadline moved to December, and then to February. February came around and that turned into April, which he said it'd be done before his grand opening on a new shop he moved to. Then April turned to June. June turned to July. Mid July @ms3_mzrzoom and @tr_gunnr offered to swing by and just pick everything up since Mike kept giving me excuse after excuse for not finishing the engine.

Ben showed up and managed to smooth talk us into leaving it a little longer with promise to have it done by the end of the month (July). I've been trying to contact him for a week for an update and all he said was "I'll call you later" and " I'll get with you later, I'm working". Per our last conversation all he was missing was the Xcessive lower intake, (which IMO should've been ordered when I sent him money along with the usual parts, rebuild parts etc).

Now, I understand delays in machining, powder coat, etc, but his excuse for the delay has always been parts, bearings, or test equipment. He received the LIM 3 weeks ago and said he just had to modify it for the semi p ports and it was ready to go. Still can't get a straight answer from him and at this point I'm fed up. Tired of the lies and the bullshit. Throughout the span of the past year he's completed entire cars, full engines, and even smaller jobs.

Well those were all fairly local to him and tend to actually get work done. I'm in Texas and have no way of personally checking on my stuff. I'm sure his work is great and if you're close to him he'll take care of you, not so much if you're across the country.

I dont know RPM motorsports, its owner, nor have had any interactions with them. I am however a window shopper person every time I go to the track; and I have seen RPM vehicles as "shop cars" on their booth/tent. Like I said, I can't speak on their work quality/ethics; but a shop car under the shop booth should not have zip ties instead of M8 bolts. That in itself would be enough for me not to take my vehicle to a shop.

Anyway, I live in MD and RPM is about 2-1/2 hours from me, IRP is about the same distance, and I won't be going to either place because of all the horror stories I'm reading here and on FB.
Pete, Paradise Racing in MD rents their dyno by the hour (or used to at least), reach out to the owner Luis for more info.

On the tuner, have you reached out to Nelson Silverio? I know he does haltechs, not sure if he does other ECUs. I know Gaby Skern Skernracing.com - Home does link ecu tuning, but getting ahold of him was not easy back when I reached out to him. Best of luck to you!

Thank you kind Sir! I'll have to reach out to Luis @ Paradise to ask about the dyno rental. On the tuners, I knew of Nelson but haven't contacted him yet. Will check out Gaby Skern as well, as I've never heard of him.

Also agree with the observation on seeing zip ties on a "shop car" where proper bolts/fasteners should be - I'd steer clear of such shops as well!
