To rev, or not to rev (The story of the sacred sound of a rotary)

What Do you guys do when someone says the classics line "rev it"

Do you let the peasants hear the sacred sound that is the rotary?
Do you have an exhaust valve so that no man will experience the brap brap brap of the rotary?
Do you have a muffler so non shall feel the tremors erupting from the the rotary?

Smack it off the limiter - continuously until their ears bleed - lay waste to all mere mortals

Yes, if it was an adult who asked. But if it was a neighborhood kid, then sure why not. It'd probably make their day...

The only time someone asked me to Rev my engine was at a local Car meet, and I use the term loosely. I just drove normal.

lol, great answers!

I had the perfect opportunity to enthrall the masses a few weeks ago; it was a nice day, about 50 degrees, a Friday so I'd driven the FD to work. I'd had a meeting at another local business I had to attend and got back to the shop about 30 minutes before first shift was leaving, so the car was warmed up to operating temperature. Come quitting time, I was one of the first out of the parking lot and so I got all over it as I drove past several people waiting to cross the road to get to the parking lot.
The next Monday I had several people tell me how cool the car sounded!
Yep, ya gotta love the rotary.

I dunno, free revving without any load on the engine sounds kinda silly to me.. If I recall, I've actually had engine builders bitch about people doing that as it can mess up otherwise perfectly good engines if the owner does it chronically.

maybe I'm just a boring bastard...

This may not be a popular opinion but I think rotary engines with less than 3 or 4 rotors sound like crap...(or brap). It's a higher pitch rattling noise that I do not find pleasant. Good thing its turboed so it's not as obnoxious. Unique sounding, sure. Pleasant/godly/sacred?...hardly.

A Big factor of that is the Exhaust that is on it. If someone slaps together a cheap exhaust that's thin walled, then its going to be ratty and obnoxious.
My HKS is loud, but it still sounds great.

There is a difference between loud and obnoxious.

But the magic saying here... to each his own right?

if someone asked, id give em the beans... why not. pretty much the same reason as spalato, it might be a little silly or pointless to us but to someone else whose only experience with an fd is from video games and youtube videos, it might mean a lot to them. if i can make someone smile from a rev or two then why not? no big deal......

I completely agree with you on this.

Out here in the Boulder area I have only seen one other rotary powered car (RX8), so the way I think about it is if someone asks me why not. To us the sound might not be that unique or rare but to people who have never heard a rotary scream at 9K its a once in a lifetime experience that usually ends with a big grin on their face.

Back in the seventies even if it was a station wagon, if sounded good you got a hand-job.

I have had many compliments on the sound of the exhaust on my B2200, its nothing special, a non turbo S4 13B engine, pace setter header, 2 90 degree mandrel bends into a 2.25" magnaflow oval muffler with no packing left, then straight into a Magnaflow XL 7" round muffler that is 28" long, then over the rear axle into a 3" tip, no cats. I have not really heard it outside since I am the only person who has driven it, but I think it sounds like a snowmobile, sort of the sound of a 2 stroke snowmobile with an aftermarket pipe/can, which is popular here, which is why I get compliments, lol.

When someone asks for a rev sometimesI give it to them. Not because I'm a dick but here in CA, revving your engine is considered exhibition of speed which is worse than a speeding ticket (by far) so the conditions have to be right for me to oblige.

I love the sound of a two rotor. Especially at high RPM... Freaking screaming banshee coming to get you no other sound like it

Yep! Any two rotor engine can sound freakin' awesome with the right exhaust. Conversely, they can sound HIDEOUS with a 'fart can' or otherwise shitty exhaust.
You really can't beat the Racing Beat dual. N1 dual is close.

I actually have a Racing Beat Dual on my RX7...still not feeling the sound. But then I didn't get the RX7 for the exhaust noise either.

I ran without a muffler for 2 days before I tore everything down for my rebuild, holy **** with the pre and primary cat in place this car was LOUDER than anything I have ever heard. I got pulled over within 5 minutes of having no muffler (just a straight pipe from the cat). Luckily they let me off without any hassle, they were interested in what type of car it was (Efini badge on the car) and what if the V8 was from a 69 mustang
