Rear upper control arm bushing

Hi all,

I checked with Power Flex and they don’t seem to sell the bushing below (blue circle). This is the rear upper control arm that connects to the rear spindle. My car is JDM if that makes a difference from the US spec.

Anyone know where I could find them, preferably the poly bushings like Power Flex, Energy Suspension etc... Or are they the same size as any other bushing in the suspension setup?

Cheers

That’s a pillowball bushing. Not aware of any poly replacements for those. Either stock or J-Auto afaik.

As mentioned, that is a pillowball. It acts like a balljoint and rotates so that the suspension doesn't bind. You don't want a poly bushing there since it does not articulate.

Yep. It's a zero compliance bushing so the stock one is as good as it gets. If the bushing isn't worn (no slop or clunking from the rear end) don't touch it, leave it be.

if the rubber boots are worn but the bushing is fine, replace those boots. That's how they fail - the boots get old and sag, dirt gets in the bushing and tears it up.

I replaced all my bushings and pillowballs on the rear suspension last year. If you are going the through the trouble to replace the bushings I would recommend replacing all the pillowballs too. I purchased new ones and rubber grommets from J-Auto.
  1. Remove the rubber grommets and clean out the old grease
  2. You will see a retaining ring that needs to come out on one side with retaining ring pliers.
  3. Press out the old pillowballs and clean out the remaining grease from the control arm.
  4. Press in the new pillowballs and replace the retaining ring and new rubber grommets.
  5. You will not need to pack grease in the new pillow *****.
I took a wire wheel with my hand drill and cleaned up the control arms and spray painted a clear laquer on them just so they would stay cleaner. That part is optional but they look like new!

A poly bushing also would not locate the control arm properly because it flexes in all directions. You need the precise location provided by a pillowball.
