So the previous owner of my FD decided to weld on to the steering shaft to install a Sparco Quick Release. It basically looks horrible now and I have a large gap where I want a hub. What are my options? Am I stuck replacing the entire steering shaft? Any creative ideas?
With a large lathe, (or by cutting off the lower mount, and rewelding later) you could possibly turn off the sparco weld-on stub, but that wouldn't be a very rigid set-up and not great for chatter - then you'd need to dress and clean up the stock splines - which would be a labour intensive solution.
Quite truthfully, you would more than likely have an easier time replacing the steering column than doing the machining operations required to re-fit the OE stuff. In addition to it probably equal to or less than what you'd pay to reverse it. Broaching splines is a little specialized in that it requires a specific machine to do it.
I would post a want ad in the classifieds or wherever you prefer to look. I bet someone has one for less than what it would cost you to do the former.
