My FD is throwing a hissy fit.

Hey All,

I have a 1994 FD and it's a slushbox car. Don't hate, I got it cheap and it will soon be converted to 5 speed. Anyhow, I had recently notice
a strange noise coming from under the dash area while on boost. I can't think of any vacuum hose under the dash since I don't have a boost gauge.
The only thing of is the break booster, is it possible for it to leak boost into the cabin?

Thank you for your input. Jay

What does it sound like? There's no vacuum under the dash, just electronics and some water hoses for the heater.

Have you done any recent type of modification to the car? As far as you know is the car stock or modded?

It makes a hissing sound and it's progressive with throttle input, and a slight gas odor.

Could be an old previously uninstalled mechanical boost gauge vacuum line, if the noise is new it may have been capped and recently sprung a leak.

It could be when you get into boost and fuel pressure increases something leaks/squirts gas. Where is the odor coming from, I would also advise not driving the car until this issue with gas smell is resolved. As much as I would like the make the FD more rare I hate to see them get burned and people jumping to the conclusion that the rotary engine is unreliable and bad.

It's probably an exhaust leak. Does it always hiss? Does it sound like drilling(bad turbo)? Are you sure it's not emanating from the transmission(bad bearing)?

This car is 100% virgin and it's kind of nice to have a factory condition car. The hissing sound is not a high pitch sound, it more muffled sound, and when it starts hissing, it smell like gas or diluted/gas smell, not super strong but strong enough to get one/s attention. The car runs normal and doesn't feel like it's down on power.

How would one know the brake booster is not leaking? Yes, I will check under the dash for previous accessory install and the pressure senor.

Thank you, Jay

One thing that's easy, inexpensive, and worth doing is to replace the 2 vacuum lines going to the brake booster. This was an old Mazda recall, you can get the recall kit relatively cheaply. If the check valve in the vacuum line is bad you'll get fuel smell.

Get with Ray Crowe and tell him you need the brake booster hose recall kit and he'll know what to get for you. Should be cheap (like under $20 last I saw) and takes all of 2 minutes to install.

Hey Dale,

I got some nylon check valve from you years ago for my '93. Is Ray still with Malloy"s, I made a big purchase years ago for my FD, then my wife's Speed6. If he's not there, can you give me his number?

Thank you, Jay

Copied/pasted:

For a long list of parts, your best bet is to email him at Crowe.Ray@aol.com.

Otherwise give him a buzz at (703) 785-5554

Fascinating - I think I also developed this problem over the last year. Nice to know that it might be a cheap fix.
