Mid engine FD

So there is a mid engine, Audi 2.7 swapped FD at SEMA.

Anyone know more about the build? I couldn't find much info.

Chelsie Lesnoski, Penticton, British Columbia, Canada

’93 Mazda RX-7 FD

Booth: Oracle Lighting #20547

When its builder proclaims it to be the “world’s first mid-engine Audi 2.7 twin-turbo Mazda FD RX7,” you know a lot of custom work went into this project. The bodywork received a 6-in. custom metal widebody treatment and incorporates custom front fender and hood vents and custom rear louvers and diffuser. Custom two-tone paint with satin and gloss finish adorns the exterior. The rear subframe and firewall were fabricated to accommodate the relocated engine, and the fuel cell was likewise moved to the front of the car. Among other custom components on this RX are the shift linkage, exhaust, dash, interior and axles. “Every nut, bolt, weld and paint was done by my own hands,” Lesnoski stated.

I love the level of fabrication in this but the terminology is inaccurate.

To be labelled a mid-engined car, a vehicle must have its entire engine located behind the front axle but ahead of the rear axle. If any portion falls over either axle, it is described as front or rear-engined.

By definition, the factory FD is a mid-engined car (albeit a front midship design not a rear midship design). This car is not mid-engined. It is rear-engined, as the entire engine is not located in front of the rear axle.

Just disappointed that it isn't rotary. Looks like a lot of time, money, and effort went into it but at the end of the day it's one of these useless SEMA show cars that will never be driven. Not to mention many of them don't even run or drive, they just look pretty in a booth.

Top tier workmanship for a car that will most likely never be enjoyed.

Not the turbocharged 2.7 they put in the old Allroad I hope. That was one of the worst engines ever made.

This!
Doesn't get my vote, but I've seen worse things done to FDs.

Sorry, but that's just bonkers wrong. The build, however, is just pretty OK. The welds make me feel sad in pants.

Here's a quote from Audiforums dot com.

Like any audi engine changing the timing belt and water pump at 80K is a must, you risk breaking the timing belt and bending valves if you don't. You should also change the thermostat and serpintine belt at the 80k mark.
CV boots will most likely be cracked and spilling grease on the inside of your front wheels around this time as well.
After the 120k mark you might notice a strange noise like a police siren or a dentists drill indicating that your turbos have just blown up on you. This repair will cost you close to 10 grand to fix. Sorry about that.

Next you'll try to say that the RS4 had a shitty powerplant.

It requires strict adherence to maintenance like almost every other German powertrain and can easily support 400 ft lbs unopened but unfortunately it was attached to a sled that had too many meh systems alongside Audi's weak sauce 'service position' requirements to do anything.

not sure there’s even enough room in an FD to even mid-mount a 1-rotor coupled to a transaxle, lol

the longer RX8 chassis might be a better option.
