Looking at a FD Whats a fair price?
Hi I was trying to see the classifieds to compare prices but I guess Im a noob and am blocked from that feature. I was looking for some comparable listings or sales in the past. There arent too many out there to compare and the blue book dosnt work on this car.
Anyway I have my eye on a 93 FD with higher miles clean title that needs some work. It has the original twin turbo set up that have leaky seals subsequently the car has been sitting for several years. Also needs input bearings on the trans and the owner sold the engine management system off of the car.
Otherwise complete, mostly stock besides it had an aftermarket EMS that was removed. Clean body from what I can see in the pics.
What is this "barn find" car worth?

Black manual around 200k miles.
Not sure on trim level but it has a wing and leather. Don't know if they are original or not.
I tried searching vin but it didn't say trim level either.

Since Kelly blue book is hardly a good resource to judge value of these FD’s I had to come up with a unconventional means for me to give a rating for any FD I came across for sale.
My dilemma was a low mileage FD for a high price, or a high mileage FD for lower price with money left over to fix etc.
I came up with a point system that helped put a numerical value on these cars.
My preferred FD of choice was a yellow 95 with no moon roof (I know they didn’t make OEM yellow for 95)
Every 10000 miles was 1 point
Every $1000 was a point
Moon roof was 1 point
Years: 93 = 2 points, 94 = 1 point, 95 = 0 points
Color Code: yellow = 0, white = 1, silver = 2, red = 3 etc.
Add up all the points, and the lower the number the better the value.
I also tried to keep the list up to only FD's that are for sale or have been sold within the year.
Obvious there is other things to factor, like engine rebuild, mods, etc. but this was a tool to help gauge and keep history of FD’s going for sale.

This document is about 3 years old so some of the links are long dead and prices are different because I stopped updating it after I got my FD
Feel free to pm if you do not wish to have your link for show on my rx7 FD pricing chart.

I thought this made a lot of sense.
What should you pay for an RX-7 FD? 5/8/18
The best FDs have shot up in value over the last three years, and the best examples in the world now top out at an average of $34,500. With that being said, #2-condition (Excellent) examples that you won't feel awful about driving can still be found for an average of $22,600, and Good examples for $13,500. The smart route here is to focus more on condition, sensible modifications, and service history more than mileage. For the moment prices peaked in January 2018, but with the way Japanese sports cars of this era are climbing, quality FDs should at least hold their value for the time being.https://www.hagerty.com/articles-vid...7-buyers-guide

For me personally, milage is not an issue. Mostly because these engines have to be rebuilt every so often, as well as wear items because of the age of the car. I bought mine with over 200k miles that was very well taken care of and I am absolutely happy with it. It will always be a work in progress, but it is nearly perfect. Had it inspected at DNA Garage in Santa Clara, CA before purchase.
If I had to do it again, I'd buy the cheapest cleanest shell I could find with a blown engine and have it rebuilt. Many people told me to do that before I bought mine, but since I was just returning to the country to accept a job and didn't have a car, I needed a running example. And I could not be happier with the way the car was taken care of. However, nothing could beat the rotary anxiety of a freshly built motor, as I am having mine done now for my single turbo conversion.
