LED Tail-lights....New Design
^^^^
Yeah, THAT'S much better, especially if you could do something similar with white on the front turn signals... though I still like the simple circles just fine.

Part of what makes that great is all if the subtly tapered shapes, as far as the thickness of the led, and the way it sort of tapers off and disappears at the outside. All if the takes I've seen on it thus far have looked really blocky and inelegant.

Light Shaping Diffusers (LSDs) | Luminit, LLC
You could laser cut the film and then apply it to the inside of a lens and LED backlight the area. By doing this, you'd come very close to the crazy concept design. Or course, the Luminit film is not cheap.
Check out my build thread for my recently completed center brake section LED conversion. Much more simple than the crazy concept but it gives you an idea of the result with using the film.
You'd need to use a diffuser film like what Luminit sells:

The problem is there is zero space at the edge of the lens so I can't backlight it. The only thing possible it to use edge lighting technology which is still expensive but solves the space problem.
I can get some pictures later today to explain easier. This is why I was having trouble making a diffused setup because most of my ideas were having the leds behind a diffuser but space was at a minimum.
K. All the work I have done is with backlit LEDS and diffusers but I may be confused as to what you mean.
I know the OEM lens is really close to the outer clear (and blacked out) lens but I would envision removing the stock lens and replacing it with a new lens that has the luminit film on it with everything else blacked out. You'd end up with a lens in the pattern shown by the poster that you would then rework behind it with backlit LEDs. So, you'd have a bunch of area with witch to work.
Again, not easy but doable for someone that wanted the crazy diffused look. Would have to figure out what to do with the center section as the one I modified only had a clear lens in one part of the center section.
