Sounds like a good plan. What I'd love to see is an OEM unit on one side and the led one on the other. Also make sure the sunlight shines on the back of the car. Thanks for doing this.

LED Tail-lights....New Design-ruehujr.jpg

Sunlight behind us at about 10am on a cloudless day in Houston, TX. The photo was taken with an iphone4 and is completely unedited save for me blocking out the mayday plate and resizing it. No color or contrast correction. With the lights on (and brake not applied) you could barely see the OEM ones were on.

The left are OEM tails with bulbs that arent more than a year and a half old. Right are carshop glow tails.

Here's after a couple minutes of editing. This is more what it looked like in person...

^ Those look good. I wonder what the difference is from what was posted earlier?:

The earlier post is in the shade and you can see the individual LEDs where now, in the sun, you can't. The earlier post has the Glow Shop LEDs being dimmer than the OEM center section. The new shot has them being as bright or brighter than the centers and now you can't see the individual LEDs.

Did they change the type of LEDs they use? I've never seen 5mm LEDs that can perform as the pic shows.

What the CarShop Glow guys should do is perform actual measurements of the light output so they can definitively prove they are equal to or brighter than the OEM ones. It's easy to do.

Cool license plate BTW

I've got to agree with Mike, the CarShopGlow lights are just as bright, imo brighter, than stock (I'm the one in the Mayday car pushing the brakes). The LED's also had a much cleaner output in the bright light, again imo.

I didnt post any earlier pictures. I just happen to know the mayday garage guys in person, saw this thread, and figured Id chime in with what Ive personally seen. I dont know anything about the tails other than the crazy expensive price tag. Im trying to provide completely unbiased information as Im not affiliated with mayday garage or carshop glow and it wont help me in any way to prove they are, in fact, brighter than OEM. No trick photography, no hours of editing and photoshop work.

^ Sorry, see the pic that was posted by someone else of their car with the Carshop Glow lights. I've edited the info. There is a big difference between those and what you have posted.

Doesn't matter to me as I like my retrofits but to others, it's a great opportunity to sell, especially if they are as bright as claimed.

Yeah that's weird that red car is mayday's shop car so maybe they are different from the actual product?

we (mayday garage) do not make these tail lights. car shop glow makes them. they are on our cars.

i was supposed to take side by side pics on my car but the day i was swapping lights i was also doing my suspension and it got dark and never got around to doing it.

mike told us about how everyone wanted to see pics so on sunday we pulled davids car around next to mike to show. if you were there in person watching the cars drive off and brake while going into the lot, you can see the car shop glow ones are brighter. i dont know what LED's he uses but he knows his stuff. the guy that makes these tail lights came to houston to pay us a visit. all he does in japan is lighting and LED's for benz's and VIP cars and such.

hopefully anyone that has bought a set can chime in on feedback. he is also going to make a diffused one. i told him i would rather have it diffused. he said for that he was going to use "fiber" his english is not so great but he gets his point across.

^ If you get a chance, ask him for the specifics on the "fiber". I am pretty versed on LED technology and don't know of any fiber that will be bright enough for a brake light application. If it exists, I'd love to learn more about it as I can use it for my DRL turn signal project.

I've tested a number of the side emitting fiber products and none could be made bright enough. The newer way of doing this is to use "light guides" but there are no aftermarket makers of these either.

This is definitely something that will have a substantial market following. However, with the variety of mods that can be done to the taillights, I think perhaps offering customization would promote a greater return on your product start-up's investment. I've been looking around for awhile to get led 99 spec style taillights. Alas, the only potential projects and sales have all died out on 7club. Let me know if anyone knows anything! Thanks.

David has made a DIY on how to make them.

That's why you don't buy cheap LEDs. I can replace all my LEDs individually but I haven't had any go out and it has been a few years.

If the tails had mathced this style, without the beeing able to se every single LED, it would have looked awesum.

yes, we really need a solution that is up to date. On new cars you won't find taillights where you can see individual leds. mercedes recent s and c class lights look really great at night.

^I think you've got it figured out! I think if you copy the design on the 1st pic of this thread, it would look more artsy instead of following the lines of the housing.

I am very interested in upgrading the lights in my 7 but 1200-1400 just seems stupid expensive for taillights.

Images are over exposed. You still have the individual leds just like mayday garage.

The same people who want LED tails are the ones who are also willing to spend 1k+ on HWL, R-Magic, Re-A, Attain, etc. Its the same principle. There's a lot of work into them.

Yes the outer ring is individual leds. I'm working on some CNC diffuser lenses to make them solid. The brake lights are already diffused however.

I don't love the oblong single loop design... it's nowhere near as elegant a shape as is depicted on the Audi/Mercedes.
