Leaking BNR twins, could crank case pressure be the issue?
Hope everyone's still doing well! (And to the East coast guys, apparently Premium is NOT in a shortage so just use the FD as the daily for now XD)
Got the following problem and was curious if anyone experienced this and resolved it.
Issue:
Oil leaking out of the primary turbo on a set of BNR Stage 3 twins.
I've checked shaft play and there is minimal side to side and 0 in and out.
I did have a chat with Bryan from BNR and he states it could be from excessive oil pressure. Which makes sense to me but I do experience the issue at idle, where oil pressure only hits around 30-40 PSI. Could I have built up too much pressure, blown past the seals and am now in need of a rebuild on the turbos?
Prior to the issue, I had a very small catch can plumbed to the filler neck with a vacuum line to the primary turbo inlet but after installing the Full Function Idler pulley, there is little to no clearance available to run a vac line to the nipple.
My current PCV setup is actually non-existent. I have an Elite SS Oil Filler neck with the -10AN fitting open (was planning on plumbing a breather can). I heard that the baffled opening on the SS filler neck is too small to properly vent?
Could the lack of vacuum be my issue?
I've heard there is also a capped vent somewhere on the middle iron that people use to plumb for crankcase venting?
Location is pictured below, it's not from around the drain tube, rather the M6 bolted flanges clocking around the turbo body.
Picture from underneath the car, you can see the dark oil seeping from around the bolt holes.
I had my BNRs awhile (couple of years) in storage before I got to the point of installing them. I have a simplified sequential systems (no emissions), and I got a fancy IRP oil filler pipe. When I was first cranking the car over, I noticed an oil puddle that was the result of improperly-small o-rings on my Sakebomb oil filter pedestal. After changing those, and test cranking more, I noticed an oil puddle on the other side! It was coming from my brand new BNRs! After getting the car started-up to get to my local shop (lucky!), they eventually found that my fancy new oil filler neck was not venting (because I had capped the AN-10 bung and not installed my catch can yet). After installing my catch can, no oil from the turbos at all. Hope this helps.
