...until about an hour ago. Just took a ride in a Cobb tuned GTR.
The power to weight ratio is prob about the same, but the way the GTR put the power down about melted my face off. Its unbelievable and I'd be lying if I said it doesn't make me consider getting into one.
Still love my FD though... its way sexier looking and has a feel to the road that's nearly unmatched!!! Did I really just play the 'feel' card? It is way better looking though!!!!
No other point to this post other than to say there is always another faster car
I got a chance to drive my friends GTR with 1500rwhp.
It's impressive, and just devastating acceleration—so much so that even though there's all sorts of wizzardry like 4wd and computer aids to keep it from spinning off the road, my butt dyno just told me it wasn't right and I'd lift off instinctively. Never mind there's almost no place to safely unleash that—you close on other cars and traffic so fast, you're legitimately likely to freak someone out and have them do something stupid around you. I sound like an old man. It was fun though.
A cobb tuned GTR smoked me on the track, that is until it broke down. The guy ended up fiddling with his Cobb the rest of the day and never got back out
Know a couple guys that HAD a GTR's both of them very unhappy with them. Too much plastic and too little driver feedback with all the background, electrical and awd "wizardry" aforementioned.
I havn't driven a GTR but i dont find them appealing. If i was to have one (if i could afford one) it would only be either to win races or pissing contests. For actual pleasure - ie a car that handles lke its supposed to and gives me the warm and fuzzies driving it and just looking at it it would be something much more low tech and with less front weight bias.
A GTR with 2000 wheel hp and still being able to daily drive it with ac, power steering, stereo, and a back seat is pretty appealing to me. Like I said, completely different animal than an fd.
Wouldn't mind having a GTR but you can't really compare two cars that are at least 15 years apart. I'm pretty sure we all have our reasons for owning FD's whether it's the looks, the engine or the way the car feels when you drive it. That's one thing I love about the FD, it's a drivers car.
I think like some others have said that the ability to daily drive it is what makes it appealing. It definitely emphasis the 'GT' portion of GT-R enough that its comfortable.
I doubt I'll ever get rid of the FD but a GT-R as a daily driver has potential. My E46 M3 is getting long in the tooth anyways .. hmmmmmmm
