Guys, upgrading my car to use the 99 spec intake ducting which eliminates the intake / intercooler competition. The original shared duct becomes dedicated to the intercooler and the air box draws from above the bumper but the 93 bumper is not designed to flow air in that space. Ive not seen how a 99 spec bumper is designed to support this and would appreciate suggestions on how best to mod my bumper to get the same effect.
The first thing you must do is relocate the air bag sensor cable from on top of the cross brace to underneath the cross brace, optionally you can make a simple bracket to lower the sensor about 1/2" to open up the intake area a little. Now comes the more involved part, getting some fresh air in there. The easiest way is to remove the light gray foam seal between the large black air duct and the bumper skin:
This will get you an approximately 10 square inch opening into the high pressure zone of the radiator entrance. If you want additional inlets there is room to cut two additional slots in the black air duct approximately doubling the square inches of opening.
Another more involved idea I have been thinking about is cutting two 2 5/8" diameter holes and adding a couple of single barrel Stromberg carburetor air scoops to the air duct to direct more air in. But, that will take some machine shop work to make the brackets to fit on the black air duct.
