Highest mileage on stock twins?

Just curious what the most milage anyone has on the original twins. I have 147,000 miles today. My engine has about 25,000 miles. My twins seem to be pulling hard and I cant detect any boost problems. I read alot that said they had to rebuild at 60K. Just curious what everyone else has.

I'm at 108k so far, and counting. Until I have the money, they'll keep accumulating miles. I expect to have 120 or so on them before I can afford new ones.

147k???

Damn, maybe I'll be able to keep my stockers going for awhile yet--88k and counting.

Zero, what have you done as far as turbo upkeep?

I always let her warm up to at least 60 deg C before getting on boost at all and cool her down for 1-2 mins. I also run Mobil1 Synthetic, which I'm positive has helped quite a bit. I also pop the hood as much as possible to let all the heat get out of the engine bay.

I got very lucky when I bought my car. I bought from some college kid that only had the car for 5 months. He was the 2nd owner. long story short I found some document in the car that had the original owners address so I sent him a letter and he called me back.

The engine was replaced at about 110-120 K miles. He drove the car from north carolina to CA alot. I know that has alot to do with it. I saw the car fax and one year he put like 60K miles on the car. His comment to me was "I think the car is fast". So I don't think he abused the car. I have since put about 12K miles since I got the car. Aside from some cooling issues that I fixed its been good. Also the guy kept the car 100 pct bone stock. I feel a little guilt for modifiying it but hey...

Ok to answer your questions about what I do now. Probably the same as some of you. about 2-3 minutes before I arrive at my destination I don't boost unless I have to. Then I wait 30 seconds before turning the car off. I always, 100 pct of the time open my hood to cool the car off, unless I am in a parking lot somewhere (which I try to avoid).

I'm a bit crazy but the other thing I do is put a 30 inch fan on my engine after I stop the car and run it on high. It cools the engine off in a few mintues. I found out if your water temp is at 95 C when you park, when you turn it off, it will hit about 112-116 C. If its at 100 C when you park it will hit over 120, and if your at 110 C when you park your temps will hit about 130 internally with the engine off. The fan will keep the temps from rising while the car is off, it will stabilize for about 2 mintues then it will drop really fast.

I wonder if I have the record? How much longer will they last? I've been drag racing and they do pull pretty hard at 12 PSI.

Damn you. I'm gonna have to do some driving this weekend. I want the record...

BTW..I got 146K out of my clutch that I just replaced. The only reason it needed replaced cause my new mods made it slip at high RPM.

How can people with high mileage cars tell if the turbos were never replaced? Mazda replaced a lot of them under warranty and I bet that someone selling a 25K mile car back in '96 wouldn't be telling people that the turbos have been replaced already...

That said I'm sure some people can make it over 100K with the stockers, they aren't really that bad, especially if kept at stock boost levels.

Anyone have a single turbo that has been on the car for a lot of miles?

I found the original owner. He told me what was done. He kept maintenance receipts also. I did call mazda to check what warrant work was done on the car too. If you give the Vin # they can find out for you.

Maaaan, my stocks have been leaking and blowing oil since like 35,000 I think. I just hit 60k yesterday and they still boost STRONG, but they leak (thank God for newspaper). Actually, a cloud of white smoke used to come out the exhaust when the second turbo spooled, but that has not happened in awhile. I think I can keep them for awhile even though they leak.

My primary turbo blew within a week of buying my car. I was desparate at the time so I found somebody over the net that would sell me his stockers for $250 but they had 110k miles on them. I figured what the hell, can't go wrong for only $250. I just wanted something to buy me some time until I could rebuild my turbos or go aftermarket. That was almost 2 years ago and about 30k miles ago. They still don't leak and they boost strong. I just started using sybthetic oil a few months ago hoping to get as much time as I can out of them.

batman got 150k out of his turbos, with 0 care. the only reason they die is because he ran the car out of oil

This is a common problem. The leak most likely isn't coming from the turbo shaft seal itself but probably the oil return pipe. The oil feed pipes leak also but not as often.

When you say your turbos leak do you know where it is coming from? Usually if the turbos are leaking the oil goes into the exhaust and causes SMOKE or they leak into the intake and FILL up the IC. Some oil in the intake is typical.

Leaking onto the ground isn't usually a "turbo leaking" problem. It is a plumbing leak problem with the oil feed or return lines, the rear return line commonly leaks and is really pretty easy to fix.

I just blew mine at 110,000. But, the owner before me road raced it. So i'm willing to bet that I would get some more miles out of them if they hadn't been beat on a little.

How do you know when your turbo blows up? What happens? No boost? or does it make noise?
