FD your last manual?
FD your last manual?
Watching the list of cars with manual transmissions dwindle, think your FD will be your last? I’ve had a bunch over the years:
1966 impala - three on the tree
1970 opel gt
1977 Toyota Celtics gt
1980 rx7
Big break family hates manuals
2000 Honda s2000
2005 Acura TL - still have 225k miles
1994 rx7- still have mint 48k miles
always loved them - nobody wanted to borrow my cars.
if I get a chance I’m eyeing a 992s 7 speed (keep dreaming) some day.

The only automatic vehicle I own is my F150. Every other vehicle I've owned has been a manual.
Hell, unless I lose a foot or they stop making them completely than I figure every future vehicle I own will also be a manual. Toyhaulers excluded unless I can find one in a manual..

I doubt it. I am an older car aficionado so chances i'll get something else that has a manual transmission. Currently, between my wife and myself we have 4 cars and 3 of them are stick (and no the auto isn't my wife's
).
).
I have two boys that don’t know it yet but they’re both getting manuals. They are still young and by the time they get their cars their friends will be driving land speeders and x wing fighters with autopilot but I feel like it’s one of my duties. And god help them if I find a couple decent early civic or corolla hatchbacks.
nope , ive had my fd since 09,
i bought my rx8 manual back in 2010, sold it last year,
now i own a 2017 audi A4 6 speed manual(they are the last audis to come in a manual and they only made about 1100 of them from 17-18)
yes the list is dwindiling quickly, given that the dual clutch transmissions outperform manuals, and are easy to drive in traffic, its no wonder they are going to the wayside quick!

Even the dual clutch transmissions will get phased out. It's already happening with high performing versions of the ZF 8 speed auto. New auto transmissions keep getting better and have "manual mode" that actually works well, there won't really be a reason for manual other than nostalgia.
Like knowing how to walk or swim, can’t remember NOT knowing how...in roughly chronological order from about age 10...
51 Ford 8N. Kind of the Swiss-army tractor if it’s day. A 6 Spd, plus an overdrive! Now ****’s all ***** hydrostatic...hey, get off my lawn!
47 *****’s we used to run and repair the fence line.
52 Chev Convertible, swapped to a column 3 spd from a powerglide by my oldest brother in 1962...at the orders if my dad. Was my first car at 15. Still have it.
63 Chev. Impala with...you guessed it, a 3 Spd on the column. (I don’t know where dad managed to find them).
70 Chevelle with power nothing and, of course, a 3spd column. Drove it thru college.
81 RX7 5 spd after college
81 Datsun 200SX 5 Spd when I had to sell the FB for my first house.
80 SAAB 900S 5 Spd inherited from my wife after the wedding...She got a Stanza auto.
The lost years—-just an old auto truck b/c I had a take-home unmarked or a cruiser.
93 FD and all is right with the world again.

Hell, if you have a transmission gear sensor then my ecu (motec) can be programmed to autoblip the throttle for you to perfectly revmatch every downshift...

Out of my 7 vehicles, 4 are manual. Last year we bought my wife a new Subaru Impreza hatch over the Mazda 3 because she wanted an awd hatch and manual trans. The awd 3 only comes with auto so Impreza it is. I tried to teach my son how to drive one but ran out of patience. My wife is going to try now.
Usually I'll have them play with the engagement point so they get the car moving without gas, then add gas pedal input.
After they've got that I have them find the engagement point on a small incline.
Give it a shot that way, it may just click

Doing it this way isn't kind to the clutch though... I use my first gen miata for that. The clutch is cheap to replace and takes all of 2 hours on a saturday morning..

Currently I DD an auto (05 TSX). It is a hand me down from my wife, if I bought for me would have been a 6spd. But sometimes its nice to not row gears... I never thought i'd say that in my life, think i'm just getting lazy more than anything.
Next vehicle, i'm not sure. I expect my next DD to be a B8/B8.5 S4. They are available in manual and DSG. I wouldn't turn down the right priced and right color DSG.

I've taught several people to drive a manual. I start by telling them to intentionally stall the car. Yes, on purpose. It takes the fear, trepidation, and frustration away from it. Then have them stall slower and slower until they find the engagement point.

That's how I learned. In a Toyota pickup. My dad told me to not touch the gas and get us going. Took a while. But next thing I knew I was power sliding on dirt roads.. before I was a teenager
I always used to say that autos were for pussies. Nowadays, I can appreciate them in a daily driver in a high traffic area like I live in. Heck, I even have an EV now for the daily slog through traffic.
The fast, manual shifting autos like in the Porsche PDK seems like a good option for today's overly powered cars on a track but I don't want to go there. Too expensive for my tastes...

I've visited a few countries in Europe and Southeast Asia and everyone drives a manual. Even the taxi drivers sitting in traffic all day drive manual transmissions. And they get to drive manual Fords, Jeeps, and plenty of other american domestic cars that are only sold with automatics in North America.
And the most annoying part is they build many of these manual transmission cars right here, in the U.S.
I'll keep driving one as long as I can still buy one.

Modern automatic transmissions can be a lot better than the 4-speed slushboxes most of us learned to hate. I spent a couple of months as a test driver helping accumulate mileage on a small fleet of RX8's for long-term emissions purposes... this might have been in 2005 or 2006. I think the 6-speed automatic RX8 was more fun to drive than the 6-speed manual RX8; you could still choose gears when you wanted, the shift response was plenty fast, and the car even did a good job of picking the right gear in automatic mode. If those cars performed closer to GTRs and Corvettes I think they would have been remembered fondly.
ABSOLUTELY...maybe. Idk. Its weird to think about it but the days of manual cars are coming to an end. From what I hear, the trans in the new Supra is pretty damn good. And the Porsche PDK...mmmm. I'll hold out hope for when I'm retired and done having kids, that manual cars will still be a thing. However, theres a strong possibility that my next sports car will be a Porsche 911 in the PDK
