I have always had a sweet spot for the Silvia S15s and recently have been trying to deciding if i wanted to sell my 94 RX7 to get one. Then i decided that I love my RX7 too much and have made a commitment to keeping for ever. Now I have been in the mix of making a small (shitty) render of an RX7 with a S15 front end conversion and how I would want it to some what look like in the end. Now I'm starting to get to the point where i want to put this plan into effect. Me and a buddy of mine have thought it threw of the process of doing it, but was wanting to get some feedback from everyone and your thoughts?

 

Keep the RX-7. Save up for the S15... their values must be going down in Japan and they were relatively plentiful there.

 

Keep the Mazda a Mazda, and by a S13 hatch. Then get the S15 front end and put a SR or RB motor in it. Then you will have two different but very fun/fast cars.

How the hell is that even possible? Aren't the dimensions of the bumper too different to fit the FD? I imagine you would have to at least shrink it a great deal height wise to even get it to fit and even then height/width ratio would be off and look odd.

Sorry man I just can't get behind this project. Not because its blasphemy - I just don't like the way it looks. On the upside, I think you'd be a shoe-in for a magazine cover if you pull it off. If that is what you are into of course

 

Also, if you kind of squint, the Series 8 bumper (99+) looks a bit like the Silvia S15's vents, so you could just get that plus a sleepy-eye (or other headlight mod) and call it a day.

And yeah, modding an S13 or S14 would be another way that is cheaper than sourcing and importing an S15.

 

Anything is possible I would modify the bumper. but what I want is to do something thats different that nobody has done. I love the look of the front end of an S15 but still love the rotory and the body of the FD. I know I could buy an S15 and have both but thats to easy.

 

I remember seeing an FD with an Rx8 bumper. Maybe it will work who knows. The first thing I'd if I were you is find an s15 headlight and see how it would fit. You would definitely be using the s15 headlights no matter which approach you take correct? If you're being serious in soliciting advice from people on the forum, I'd post what you and your friend discussed. If you want opinions on how it would look, don't bother, why would it even matter what other people think.

I was kinda hoping we were past the whole late 90s/early 2000s Hot Import Nights styled cars with mismatched headlights/taillights and matching vinyl interiors. That's how we ended up with this abomination:

 

Not so, most of the fun and interesting Japanese cars are going up in value. I'd guess this is due to a) demand from offshore and b) an almost total lack of anything interesting being manufactured today driving demand for the older metal.

Compared to the 90s and early 2000s, Japan is just not manufacturing many cheap mass market sports cars any longer.

For an S15 you're looking at upwards of $12k + shipping + whatever it costs to register it.

My personal Opinion, don't do it.

Keep the RX-7, as an RX7.

The S15 front end, if that is what you really enjoy can be put on the s14's and that will look more-so right on that car then it ever will on an FD. Also, in fabriaction costs, you'll probably spend an equal amount to just buying an s14 (non kouki) and swapping front ends.

At the end of the day, your car, do what you want.

 

Here's a slightly off-topic question, then:

Is the stock S15 significantly better than the S14 by 2016 standards? I know that it is lighter and it has more power, newer equipment, etc., (and it looks nice) but would it matter much to a tuner? There is also the disadvantage of driving a RHD car in North America.

 

But what would you call it? Remember how silvia front on a 180sx was a sil-eighty and 180 front on a silvia was a One-via?

 

Stock for Stock, S15 is better than a USDM S14 Chassis 240SX. (Sr20det vs KA)

However, as we all know, its not a difficult thing to swap out an engine, especially with the S-Chassis.

The thing about the S15 is that I'd still spend the same money on tuning the RX-7 instead. The S15 is truly great, but if you already have an FD, it's still a backward step (to me). The links above prove that you can really take it to the limit, though.
