So I bought my car in Dallas, TX in the Summer of 2004, 93 Black/Red Touring stock with 35k ish miles for what I consider a good price then and still a good price now.

Value add or too old data?

 

 

I concur; gathering multiple data points over the years will help establish a market trend and provide the most useful tool to owners. Is there a way to export the data into Excel? That would allow the moderator to generate information in various ways to best display true market values over time. Furthermore, the spreadsheet could easily be plugged into other programs such as StatCrunch for additional analysis.

Also, has anyone considered making this thread a sticky? If it goes into the graveyard, eventually users will stop contributing and it will become useless.

 

Think these two questions would be useful too - Original paint or Repainted?. And another question, major body mods (e.g. widebody) or not?

Velocity Mazda in Tyler, TX has a 1993 FD for sale with just under 30k original miles, completely stock base RX7 (didn't link, since I didn't know if that was allowed). They're asking $52,995 for it!! 6 months ago, when I was looking for one to buy, this exact car for sale from the exact same dealer was listed at $34,649. That is an interesting price increase for only 6 months of sitting in the sun...

A side note... they incorrectly have it listed an automatic (which certainly isn't helping with the sale). It is clearly a manual from the pictures and they confirmed that with an inquiry.

Seems to me they're gaining some traction in value.

 

YES, they've been gaining traction for about 5 years and may have peaked last year at about the 35k mark for nice ones.

Again what we have going on in the FD world are sellers hoping to take advantage of what they believe is a rapidly rising value on a collector car. Many of these sellers (at this point we can call them dreamers) probably never had an FD on their lot prior to the last couple of years LOL. For all we know the market has already turned the opposite direction or is going back down. In order to understand the market you ACTUALLY have to sell cars not just buy them. So if a dealer paid 20 to 25k for the example you mentioned (just a guess) and it doesn't sell for 34 it's priced too high, not too low. Just because the other 10 dealers have FDs listed at 45 to 60k doesn't mean the cars are worth that or at least one or two would have sold because at least a few should be nice examples and there are still people looking for nice examples (I'm always looking as are about 10 other people I know).......blah blah blah. That said at this time I'd say most of the enthusiasts or collectors that appreciate the car probably already own the FD of their dreams so the market/garages set aside for higher priced FDs are filled or the referenced car would have been long gone at the 34k price in 2017. As always it's about supply and demand.

 

 

It's my opinion the market is capped at about 35k for a nice FD. A nice example is the CW PEG on autotrader with 12k miles that has reached 35k two times now on ebay. The silver 94 R2 is another great example of the current market. The original owner listed it here and everywhere (even had it on rennlist) for 45k (around march 2017) and it didn't sell. Lowered the price to 36k and it didn't sell. Finally sold to the current dealer for 29k (around sept 2017) who's listing it for 50k. So the dealer wants us to believe that if he list it with 50 plus pics, puts up a video with some dude who barely understands the car, who then claims it's a good value at 50k, that now a buyer is supposed to believe it. Come on man! It's not worth 30k, it's worth 29k or what you were willing to pay for it.......... LOL. The dealer saw a very hot car market and hoped to capitalized and he got in at the height of the market. You don't always win, sometimes you lose. I think that particular car is worth 29k or that's about what I'd pay if everything checked out. It has too many miles, tweeter holes cut in the door panels and quarter panels etc.... Will the market continue to go higher who knows but so far it has not proven do it and it could be lower. I don't know what the market truly is at this time because I haven't sold anything. I have 3 FDs (plus my track car) at this time and I don't plan to sell them unless someone wants to pay stupid money and to me that's right around 35k LOL.

I suspect in 5 years the market will be higher or in the 40k range for nice cars. Or it could be abysmal with interest rates at 7 percent and people struggling to make house payments. Who knows.

The one thing I do know is if I was a dealer I'd be unloading right now because the market is red hot Or just like the stock market now isn't the time to get greedy. The greed may have come and gone.

I left things like "original paint" and "original interior" out on purpose; I intended things like that to be included in the optional notes or modifications long answer sections. We can beat the information to death trying to get as many data points as possible to graph but in the end it will be difficult because most FD's that sell are modified in some way and mileage is a huge variable. I think the best use of graphs would be to plot factory colors and sale prices and 100% stock low mileage sale prices over the years.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

had an individual who has been after my ssmR2 since I purchased it.. we eventually agreed on a price I couldnt refuse but he could not get the loan to supplement his cash
this probably doesnt count but could perhaps be used as an indicator...

 

There is the SSM R2 with 32k miles that sold for 42,500. Mr R2 should enter that data. AFAIK that is the most expensive FD I've seen sell. Love the SSM cars and 94/95 R2s are my favorites

 

I have now stickied this Thread and subject material..seeing it would be informative to have some price points from different areas of the globe/country..
