To answer your question...no, no one is likely to set you down and spoon-feed you info about the car. But if you want to spend some time reading, this is a good place to start:

Yeah, it's overwhelming. There's a lot to know from general options and trim, years produced, stats, then down to how does a rotary engine work, how to you fix/modify one, etc.
Wikipedia has a good 10,000 foot view of the RX-7 and it's history -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_RX-7
Doug DeMuro has a fun video where he walks you around the car, talks about it, and goes for a short drive -
Past that, there's tons of stickies on the forum, tons of videos on how the rotary engine works, etc.
If you have specific questions let us know and we can answer or point you to a good resource.

There is also a nice coffee table book by Jack Yamaguchi, three SAE papers, and some manuals Foxed.ca - Mazda RX-7 Manuals
the neat thing is that Mazda is a small company and the people that made the FD are around, and you can meet them, which is really cool.
the important thing to remember is that the Mazda people have an incredible eye for detail. my favorite example right now is the FC door lock ****, it is designed to look square from the driver seat, but when you hold it in your hand it is made in forced perspective.
