2022 Mazda RX-7
I don't hate it. But I don't love it. Kinda how I felt about the RX8 when it came out. Looks too much like a Toyota 86. This seems to be the route manufacturers are taking though. Making everything muted. It would be nice if I saw that and instantly thought RX-7.

I think it is like the new Chevy or GMC truck. Everyone disliked it but it grew on everyone. I think if it ever were to become true and a rotary were to become real it would grow on us quickly out of shear desire to have one. Especially if it were a limited production. Unfortunately, like most realists point out, the EPA standards are a real hurdle the farther along we get into the future for the common rotor.

I fully intend to buy a new RX sports car if/when Mazda releases it. I would absolutely NOT be inclined to buy one looking like that though.
You seem to have completely missed the fact that your rendering has nothing to do with mazda or mazda's design team. Please tell me you understand that the rendering was created by some random guy on the internet...
I still think Greg Thompson has done the best 'updated' RX-7 out there.

If you're not familiar, check out his site:

Or this thread where Greg (Rotr8) chimes in.

I'd love nothing more than to make a run of these.
(no. it's not gonna happen)

Unless they make something that looks like this, I'm not interested. I don't care if it has a 2.5 Turbo from the CX-9. JUST MAKE IT!
But the render that the OP has linked to is just bleh.

Ya know... when this render was first released the Series 3 Exige wasn’t yet made.
But man, the headlamps on the *new* Exige (Series 3) are really a dead ringer. Now that I look at the two - a LOT is similar.

Thats actually a nice hurdle to clear. Now you just need to make the fenders, hood and front end work with off the shelf Lotus lamps.

Enjoy the rotary for what it was in its heyday. Mazda has doomed it to a low volume, low range compliance EV in Europe. It ain't coming back in a form that anybody here would want. They are a niche quasi-luxury brand now and there's very little reason to think that will change anytime soon.
People like GMC trucks? Sorry man, I gotta politely disagree with you. That's just a poor rendering and it holds zero appeal or continuity with the evolution of the RX-7 lines.

Then I would say that it is time to bring back the Cosmo. There is clearly a market for a luxury coupe, albeit a small one. If Mazda wants to be different, maybe they'll develop a twin-charged V4 with electric assist and AWD... with a manual transmission.
And if Mazda is going electric, maybe there will be a rotary hybrid sports car, and they can call it the EX-7.
Why V4 engines are so rare ("stiffness is everything"):

Which is is why it’s up to *us* - the community at large - which still loves this vehicle to continue its legacy.
This is the exact reason I love the Greg Thompson design so much. It builds on the FD chassis we know, love and have *almost* perfected.
Just like Singer and Porsche. Or David Lee’s Ferrari Dino. Or even Dodge Magnum owners retrofitting modern Charger front ends. If you want it, you gotta build it. The cost benefit from Mazda just doesn’t make sense and frankly - you probably wouldn’t like what they came up with anyhow (case in point: RX-8).

The problem is that I don't think Greg went anywhere with this. I know I called him and also Cam about being one of the first to get a kit. I don't think Cam could get the financing for it and Greg moved on. At least that's what I think happened. I would love to be wrong. I agree that its the best body kit ever designed for the FD,

What do you think it actually costs to get a huge bodykit like this into production? I suppose this is on par with the FEED or Veilside kits, so retail would have to be up around $10K. Or maybe just built bespoke. Think $100K gets you the first one?
I'm OK with the idea of using a rotary engine as a range extender, if it's possible to build a lightweight EV / series hybrid that is fun to drive. 250hp in a 2800 lbs FD is fun to drive, I bet it would be even more fun with instant torque from 0 RPM. Give it just enough battery to travel a reasonable speed and distance without gas, perhaps 10-20 miles at 65 MPH. Then add a rotary engine plus a small fuel tank get the range up to 200+ miles so it's not too painful to take on long trips. Rotary engine and a fuel tank should be much cheaper than adding equivalent range using batteries and possibly lighter as well. Using a rotary engine without coupling it to the drivetrain could allow you to build a super-peaky peripheral-ported engine and then run it at engine speeds where it's efficient. It will sound weird to have the engine always running at constant RPM, but there are already cars and other vehicles running constant engine speed because of CVTs.
