Hello fellow rotarians,

I am in the process of importing a RHD 1994 FD with after market turbo kit. The engine looks modified. Registered importer in MD said that EPA will most likely reject the car because it has a modified engine. It is an exempt from EPA or DOT approvals otherwise since its more then 25 yrs old. Does anyone have any experience to share with modded 25 yrs or older imports from UK or Japan? Should I ask for a pre-approval letter? I am in doubt. thanks

 

I would check with another importer for their opinion. There are a bunch of highly modified cars making it here.

 

I've gone through this process a few times now with cars from both Japan and the UK. It doesnt matter. If your importer is telling you that then you need to get a different one. Based on that, they may not know what they're doing with "special" cars.

 

Any recommendations for an ICI (independent commercial importer)? I called few others Wallace Env. Testing Lab. in TX and Falcon Lab. and Redmer Services in MI and just got voice machines. I need an ICI that has done this kind of import before.

 

there are a lot of options... call japanese classics in virginia and see what they can do. them and their competitors do this all the time
