Thinking of buying 93 RX-7, 54000mi.
OK,
THis one has 54000 miles on it. Red With Black leather. Touring package. It has been driven 17000 miles since 1995.(did a carfax) It is now for sale as a trade in from a middle aged car collector at my local Lexus dealership. There are NO mods done to it and it is PRISTINE. The guy showed it and was part of the rx-7 club, so it is cleaner than any I have ever seen. The dealer wants $16500 for it. There is a 6 month warranty on the whole thing. Is this too much or a good deal? Should I jump on this? I have done a lot of research on these cars and the problems inherent to them. THis would be my daily driver and I would take care of it like it was family. Any warnings or words of encouragement would be appriciated.
Thanks,
Dan

Sounds like a good one, jump on that puppy.
Seriously, it sounds like the kind of 7 most people are looking for.
The Kelley Blue Book retail price of that car (in my zip code) is
$17,610, so $16,500 sounds like a decent price.
My guess is that sports cars may be slow movers in your area
(hard to drive in winter) and they may have dropped the price 'cause this one ain't sellin'. Just for ha-ha's I'd offer him
16.2. I bet he drops the price a bit. I never had to pay asking price for a car yet. People (and dealer's too) always set the asking price higher than what they actually expect to get.
Good luck. Let us know what happens, and show us photos.

I think the price is a little high for a 93, even with low mi and good condition. Any dealer should be able to mark down $2k so if you can get it for about $14.5k, I would pick it up in a NY minute. BTW, dealers make more on used cars -- there is usually a $5k spread btwn their buy and sell price. Try to get that down to $3k.
In the present market and economy, you should be able to swing a good deal. Have a great time!
Also don't forget to take it to a rotary specialist for a checkup and some long test drives at different times of the day, especially when the weather is hot and also during a cold start. Look for blue smoke 15 secs after the startup since that can indicate a motor going bad. Little smoke on initial start up is normal.

I agree with djantlive, it is a little bit on the high side for a 93, even if it's in great condition. Get a little bit knocked off, and grab it...but even if they wont I'd still get it cause it's hard to find a good conditioned one. Think about it this way: the more u get knocked off that price...the more you can have for mods, etc

The Book value is a little less but the book is an average of what most 8 year old 3rd gens are worth. If this is a collector car that you can eat off of I would say it should bring a little more so that price is definately in the ball park. Also a 6 month warrenty sounds great. Just make sure all the important **** is covered and that there isnt some crazy deductable on it either.

sounds like a great deal just look at the responses! people are just too harsh on the '93's, especially this late in the game it's almost like adding insult to injury and only hurts the overall reputation of the FD. whatever, good luck and enjoy the car if you get it.

Here is the number.
OK everyone. Here's the deal. I called the salesman today and told him NO. I just don't want to be spending that much of my disposable income on a car. So for all of you jokers who told me not to buy the car and asked for the number of the dealer........Here it is.
1-412-344-5800.
This is the local Lexus dealership in Pittsburgh, PA. Ask for Tom. Understand...you COULD eat off of the engine. Good luck!

PM me the VIN and we'll work on it if you're still Jonesing for the car, though. Hear the RX-7 Siren song?

No, I am not a sneaky used car saleman....although if I was, this would be a damn good ploy! I was looking at the FD because I want to own one someday and it just came out of nowhere and tempted me. If you must know, the car intrigues me mechanically and visually and I just love them.
Stupid, however is not quite what I am. As Toadman put it, "He wouldn't go into the deal without $20K banked", and I certainly don't have $20K banked. I could swing it, but not without taking a serious hit to my wallet.
The decision basically came down to either owning a badass car or being able to pay for Grad school and well.....when I am done with grad school, I will buy 2 of them just to appease my interest.
Now, with so many enthusiasts on this board and my deciding not to purchase it, I thought I might be helping someone get the car of thier dreams that I just can't have right now. It should at least go to someone that would appriciate it.
Trust me when I say this.
IT WAS NOT AN EASY DECISION!
I will own an FD, but when I can truly afford it and another car for winter and rain. haha The ugly weather here in the burgh lasts more than half the year....yuck!
Till then, I can only keep searching and wait for the right time.
