Supra Turbo or FD

I DON"T WANT TO START A FLAME WAR
I WANT TO KNOW THE PROS AND CONS OF BOTH CARS

I know some of you guys here are biased towards FD's but I really can't decided. They are both great cars.

Here's the deal, My dad promised me that once I get accepted to med school (and i will) he will help me buy the car I want. (i AM NOT a spoiled rich kid)(hell to tell u the truth my dad drives a cab)

I can't decided between a 93-95 RX-7 Touring 5-speed
or a 93.5-98(excluding 96, only autos) Supra Turbo 6-speed

The Supra is more reliable but it costs a bit more. They are both great cars. I don't plan on modding the car that much if at all (unless i get RX-7 and do reliability mods)

Sometimes i want to get the supra hella bad and other times i want to get the rx-7 hella bad.

I know i have to test drive both of them also but i want to know your experience's with these cars.

the supra in any case is just getting more and more expensive, it is SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive than a stock FD, well unless you get a 1995. The supra has deadly speed, pretty good handling, EXCELLENT reliability, and great looks, it is rarer than an FD(not sure about 1995 FD's tho). The Rex has nice straight away speed, dont get me wrong it is faster than almost any car out there, but the supra just has incredible straight line speed, the rex has awesome handling, the reliability is iffy, but just make sure you take car of it, and well the car is absolutely gorgeous.

hope you make you choice based on what you want tho.

later

Supra = Reliability and speed
Rx7 = Speed and alot of p*ssy

I love both cars too, but I think the supra is a little bulky looking, comparison to the sleek FD body shape, just my 2cents.......And good luck, let us know what you decide on

Heh, med school? You'll need all of the time you can get for studying. I'd rather my doctor spend his time in the books rather than lying on the garage floor all night trying to get some finicky car back together. Go Supra!

...this coming from an RX-7 owner too!

Because you used the word "hella", you are henceforth banned from owning either car. Please buy a Civic or a Prelude instead. Thank you.

Ok, still there? Still want a Supra or an RX-7? Ok, fine. I just hate "hella". IT makes no sense. It's a slur of the phrase "hell of a", like, "I hade one hell of a day today." "Hell of a " becomes "helluva". Ok, fine, it's still used in the proper context. "I had a helluva day today." But, then, somehow, some idiot started saying "hella". That would fine, except he didn't use it in the right context. He used it to be mean "a lot" or "very". So you get people saying "That's hella cool", which, given the etymology of 'word', means "That's hell of a cool". Which invariably leads one to ask, "That's a hell of a cool what?" Hell of a cool is a prelude to naming some thing. For instance, "The RX-7, man, that's a hell of a cool car."

Alright, end of rant. I just hella hate "hella".

The cars. They're not the same. They're in the same class, though. They're both early decade Japanese supercars (along with the 300ZX and the NSX). But, the RX-7 is a sportscar, and the Supra is a GT car. This is a subtle but important distinction.

A sportscar is very fast, handles very well, and connects you with both itself and the road, letting you feel every nuance of driving, and requiring you to drive seriously.

A GT is very fast, handles very well, and insulates you from both itself and the road, letting you forget about the specifics of what you're going at every split second, and allowing you to just drive.

So, the cars are different experiences. Like all performance automobiles, they are both driver's machines. The question comes down to what kind of driver you are, and what it is about driving that makes you happy.

Do you want to feel like you're a component of the car? An integral part of the works? Like you're driving a high revving sportbike at the absolute bleeding edge of performance, knee and peg skimming just over the black top? Get an RX-7.

Do you want to feel like you're the master of the car? Riding it, rather than being it? Like you're in a soft comfortable Caddy with more power than any Caddy ever dreamed of? Get a Supra.

They're bost fast, they both handle, they're both imminently moddable into 10 second quarter and auto-x champ daily drivers. So it comes down to how you want to FEEL while driving. Different strokes (or different wobbling eliptical orbits, as the case may be) for different folks.

Oh no - you're going to burn in rotary HELL for that one, or at least blow a coolant O ring! :p

I know a guy in Tucson who runs a speed shop and sells all those really cool clear tail lenses for Civics and such, BUT he does have an incredibly tricked out Supra sitting inside his shop with at least a hundred trophies surrounding it. SO, he loves Supras.
When I pulled in with my Rex for the first time and started chatting with him it turns out he's nuts about them also, and has probably forgotten more about modding them than I will ever learn in a lifetime........ said he worked with some dragster dood named Adam or something.

He said he missed the lightness of the Rex and handling vs. his Supra, so - go figure! (Then again, maybe he was just trying to sell me more stuff - NAH - wellllll, yeah! - he did lighten my wallet by $1K as it turns out).

Here's my advice: forget about either one, buy a $5K Toyota Celica, have your dad buy you a couple of Zanelli or Hugo Boss suits, get a good haircut, **** your brains out dating some beautiful women with all the money you've saved, graduate and buy a used 2002 Porsche GT2. By the time you graduate and pay off all of your med school debt, they'll be under 100K used. I hope.

supra is more reliable than the FD,
but the FD is more beautiful, and more exotic and rare.

Driving a supra is kinda like just following the masses,

the way i look at it, is that its like the civic of high performance imports. Everyone has one! And theres too many to count!

The Rx7 is super rare, and impresses just about ANYONE
who knows about cars, and most that dont.

Seriously,
hehe, when I told the ppl at my work that I got one,
i got yays, and high fives for it!! People telling me they're
so jealous, etc etc,
I pointed out a supra at our work to some ppl, i said
"thats a pretty nice car also", they're like "but man, it's so ugly!"

Also i drove my FD by some kids filming their skateboarding,
and the camera kid turned the camera on my car, and yelled out "wooaaahh!!!". Hehe, i heard that from my car, while
driving, with the windows up! haha

Now that was a cool feeling.

But you must take care of this cars, and take
them to a mechanic who knows alot about em, to
get the most out of em. But it's so worth it!

It's true. The RX-7 attracts a lot of attention. So many people have commented on how gorgeous my car is. Most of them have no idea what it is and they are usually pretty shocked when I tell them it is a 93 Mazda. The Supra TT on the other hand may attract a lot of attention from car enthusiests because we know how good it is but the design itself isn't nearly as eye catching in my opinion.

Just remember.......

500hp Supra = low 12s.
500hp FD = low 11s

And the RX-7 will look prettier doing it

Oh, and lets not forget..........when was the last time you saw a supra at an SCCA event? I can't even remember...

but to get 500hp to the FD costs 10x more than to get the 500hp to the supra :-D

But a RX-7 is an RX-7.

we all know that you can make a supra faster (in a straight line) for a cheaper price, but once you hit those high numbers you lose almost all street drivability. personally i think the FD looks a lot better and is more unique. it has better handling characteristics and stops well too. besides, talk about bragging rights with a 1.3L. the rex also has a unique sound. and its so ture, you never see supra's at SCCA events its always vettes and rexs that race each other.

The 7 definately gets the girls for sure and it just feeels so much like your a part of it the Supra doesn't have that feel. It's all in what your looking for.The Supra has rock solid reliablity which is good for idiots who don't know how to take care of their car.I wanted the closest thing to a race car for the stret that I could get,and you would be very hard pressed to find something closer to that mark than the 7.I've been in both (heavily modded) and the 7 for me wins every time.

Absolutely untrue!!!

I have a single turbo Supra putting 500 rwhp down on pump gas and alot more on race gas. It has been a daily driver for the last 2 months. It's been hot as hell here in NC lately (high 90's with high humidity)and my boost controller hasn't been lower than 18 psi with the A/C running non-stop. The Supra hasn't as much as hiccuped. Yes, it still has the factory radiator too!

I am even amazed at this car. I'll put it to you this way. This past weekend it was so damn hot I wouldn't have even considered taking the old 7 out. Not talking ****... just being honest. The Supra was stuck in stop and go traffic all weekend and was fine.

The car is competely docile for a daily driver. I don't know where your info came from but it's wrong.

I had my 7 out this past week(single turbo)heat index 112 stock radiator no problem either,I had no choice, 27 miles to work and 27 miles back rush hour in Chicago.I don't care what kind of car it is it's just plain stupid to get on boost in that kind of heat your asking for trouble. The Supra is a good daily driver though. Maybe you just cared more for your 7.

You are right about not boosting in the heat. I very rarely do when it's this hot. I am just saying that the boost controller is set to 18... not that everytime I drive it I hit 18 psi! But I have done it... I simply cannot back down from a challenge!

I wouldn't say I cared more for the RX-7... just that I treated it more as a race car and the Supra I treat more as a daily driver... but it is still pampered.

I still pop the hood (almost) everytime I stop for a few minutes while the turbo timer is winding down for some quick cooling. Does anyone else do this?

Nah... I don't miss it. It was great when everything was working. But thereis just too much water under the bridge for me. I still check 'em out when I see them.... and usually try to get a race

They are beautiful cars. I love hearing how much everyone here loves their cars. Too bad it didn't work out for me.
