Popping at 7K RPM
I have recently purchased a 93 R1 with all the usual bolt on stuff: Lg Intercooler, Pulleys,Downpipe, Catback,M2 ECU, MaxdaComp Radiator, Elim AST, cold air box. When I spin the car to 7000 RPM the car starts popping like an automatic weapon (only louder) the guy I bougt the car from told me this was the rev limiter. Since the car redlines at 8000, and from what I understand the M2 ECU should eliminate the rev limiter, and stock is set at 8200, I feel there must be some problem causing this. I origionally suspected the M2 ECU, but I spoke with Brain and Brett at M2 and they assured me that thier ECU mod has never failed and that only occationally have they had one not work altogether and that was always from the beginning, never a failure later. Does anybody have any opinions? The car also seems to run rather rich. ANy input would be appreciated. Thanks for your time.

If you can get your car to a dyno do it.We have a few people in the club RPNW.ORG that have had probs. like overly rich maps. On a dyno pull it showed it was running 9.5/1 fuel ratio we were all suprised it ran at all. Anyway dont count that out just on word of mouth meanwhile stay out of it untill you find out whats realy going on sounds like Detination, or injector flutter this happens when max duty cycle has been reached or surpassed.

Yeah, sounds to me like your probably running a little too rich. Those unburnt gasses are igniting in the exhaust causing the popping sound. Go to a dyno or get an A/F meter.

I'm having that problem right now, though mine starts at a lot lower rpm, ie right after the sec. turbo comes online. I thought I cured it twice before, only for it to come back the next day. I was reluctant to think it could have been the plugs, as they had less than 5k miles on them. Well, I've put in a brend new set, & it's much better now, though I'm still watching as I've been fooled twice before.

A sincere thanks to all of those who have posted to this thread. Here's a litle more info. I have changed out the spark plugs, to no avail. Although the powerband was a bit smoother up to the problem range (again 7000 RPM) but did nothing whatsoever to improve the popping. The problem is very "switch-ish' meaning that it is distinctly at 7000 RPM in any gear, keeping me in the mindset that it is electronically controlled or triggered. It's feels like the ignition is just shutting down, although I wouldn't rule out the possibility that it could be fuel related. It's just such a dramatic activity at exactly 7000 RPM that it seems electronic. Thanks again for time guys..

How does your intake look? Is it clogged? Check all the connections from your intake as well....
I agree, the car is probably running very rich......I had similar problem when I out on my FMIC I forgot to tighten down a clamp coming from the intake....my car sounded like it had a 454 in it and when I even just let off the gas it would backfire like crazy....
