Fuel Injector Cleaner: Yes/No?

A friend of my dad's is a mechanic and says that fuel injector clener works well for him when used at about 3X the strength reccomended and all run thought in 1 tank of gas on along trip. He claims that he has never seen any effect from using it as reccomended on the bottle though.

Now, he is talking about using it on thinks like Chevy Trucks, and stuff like that though. Is it okay to us on our RX-7s?

My problem is this:

My car was fine, then I let it sit for a week while on vacation, and now it appears to run a little lean after it is warmed up. This is all according to my Autometer A/F meter. Before my vacation it read perfect, abotu 2 or 3 bars rich at WOT all the time. Now, aftr the car is well warmed up I will get 1 or 2 bars Stoic, and 1 or 2 bars rich. I'm about to add a DP, and I don't want any problems. The only thing I can think of that may have caused this all the sudden woudl be dirty fuel injectors.

Any other ideas?

P.S. I am also having some minor boost problems, might that cause it? I did have these boost problems for a couple of months before this happened though. Would a cloged Precat cause this condition?

It does read rich in the mornings.

Hmm, I don't know much about your engine running rich. If it's just running rich when you first drive off for the day, it's probably normal bc the ECU likes to enrich the AF mixture when the engine is cold.

As for the FI cleaners, the best one that I have used is Chevron's Techron (not Chevron Progard which is cheaper but useless). Pep Boys usually has it for $5-6, mix it w/ 8 gal or so and use it on long trips or more highway driving. Sometimes if it's dirty, you'll want to follow up with another bottle. They sell 20 oz bottles that are bigger so you may want to get that instead of the 12 oz to get better results.

Berryman has a few FI injecter as well. It's not as good I don't think. But, it's $2.6 so I guess you get what you paid for.

Whatever you get, don't bother with the STP cleaner. It's useless!

44K

I have been using a product called 44K in my Jeep V6; it has 100K miles and has more HP than most...I contribute the smooth engine after 100K to this product. Its very expensive at 20 buck a can but this is the same stuff that the dealerships/high end shops use when you go in and pay for them to "clean your injectors". At least thats what I have been told.

I have tried all the 2-8 buck stuff at pep boys and it all blows. You can only get 44K at Napa or dealerships/high end shops.

The only problem is that I have never used it in my FD...anyone tried it???

Sorry, I mean that it is running properly in the morning, it runs rich at WOT, which it should. After warming up, then it starts running more lean, which may be okay for now, but when I add my DP I'm afraid it may not be good.

Thanks for the injector cleaner info

Clearthinker, 44K is the best and only fuel system cleaner that will open a closed injector. I have been using it in both rotarys for eight years. I certainly have no problem spending $20 a year for each car. Those that aren't using it should check out bgprod.com.

I've had very good luck with Redline SI-1 fuel injection cleaner in my last two RXs. When I picked up my new RX with 80k miles, it boosted well, but had a mysterious stumble at 5k rpm. I did a couple of things in succession which cleared the stumble up. I ran 2 bottles of the Redline stuff through 1 tank of gas (2x is OK, I wouldn't go 3x the stuff is supposedly really strong), changed the oil, changed the plugs and wires. The car runs like new now. In fact the car runs better than my last RX which had substantially more miles. I used SI-1 (1 bottle) in that one as well and it definitely helped it as well. As an added bonus, I was getting 12-14 mpg, after the FI cleaner my car is more or less a 14-16 mpg car in the city, and 19-22 mpg on the highways. If you do use FI cleaner, add the bottle with fuel top off only when you've got less than 1/2 tank of gas so that it mixes well. Try to get some highway time (I've heard that FI cleaner likes fixed relatively high RPM the best, try a 30 minute highway trip in 3rd). After 1 more fillup with gas, change your oil and filter. FI cleaner removes a bunch of sh*t off the injectors as well as rotors and housing which gets in your oil. You wanna make sure it doesn't stay there long.
