Egads! Is this boost guage supposed to be like this?
Oh man! I am in between being happy and being pissed. I had my boost guage installed today. Ummm since I am a newbie....I have a question. I have an autometer phantom boost guage (mechanical). Midpoint is zero, to left of the guage is for the vacuum from 0 to 30 and to the right is the boost from 0 to 30. While we were installing the guage, the needle pointed to zero. Okay, now when we installed the plastic tubing it moved from zero to almost but not quite to the 10 mark to the left, in the vacuum area. Is it supposed to go on zero or is this how it's supposed to be? When I drive and shift gears, it moves to the 10 and 15 area on the boost side. Did we hook this up right? or is the guage defective? uckkk! That was the biggest pain to hook up.
Please, please, please....If somebody knows, PM me or reply as soon as you can. I would really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Jason
PS...dual pods are awesome. Sometimes I have to pinch myself and say....Man! this RX-7 is SEXY!

With engine off, the gage should be at O. When at idle, the gage should be between 17-20 vacuum. Stock boost is 10 -8-10.I hope you have mods(fuel pump, injectors,ECU) to run 15 pounds.

I guess we screwed up....
Well.....With the engine off the needle is on the 10 mark of the vacuum. When it's idling it's on the 10 mark. You are right on about -8 and -10 when I drive.
OK...I think I know what we did wrong...I think we only hooked up the boost pressure without the vacuum. Yep, I have the vacuum fittings in my hand. So without the vacuum and just boost pressure installed, I guess it will always be at 10 since there is no vacuum pulling it the other way? I don't really care much about the vacuum as long is I am hitting the correct boost pressure. Sheez this is sooo freekin complicated!
I have no mods what so ever, but we ran it hard trying to get it to zero (so dumb, but hey, I'm learning). Somebody please confirm anyway if I am even remotely correct about rationalizing the problem at hand.
If I am correct, then I guess my turbos work. I am happy about that. I was always worried that they weren't working. I have never driven a 3rd gen before so I don't know how and with what I can compare this to and on top of that "sexy7" had 103K miles on it when I got her. She had her motor and turbos rebuilt at 70K. So, I am even more off about how it feels to drive a brand new functional 3rd Gen.
Thanks,
Jason
PS...Mods are coming! Blitz exhaust and SS downpipe on the way! Gosh..I hope I don't goof up the install on that! (Watkins Glen Race last weekend - Rusty Wallace's team forgot to hook up the water pump hose, raced, and wondered why he was overheating...Suddenly, I don't feel so bad anymore)
