yet another 6 port question

just bought an 86 n/a rex. i realized that the six port actuators weren't moving...turns out that they are not connected. the nipples on the bottom aren't connected to anything. can anyone tell me exactly where the vacuum hoses come from? this is getting a bit frustrating thanks

http://home.earthlink.net/~burntoast...xports_acv.jpg should be but one nipple. Look at the picture. Its the one on your left. Originaly the vac hose(its really a pressure hose) went from that nipple to another nipple on a pipe that went to your catalytic converter. If you'll look at that picture you see a large black hose conneted to a bulging piece of metal of which a pipe is coming out the bottom. That pipe coming out the bottom goes to the cat, and before it gets there, there is a nipple that should receive the other end of the vac line that connects to the nipple behind the rear aux actuator. Do you have the about 1/2 inch pipe coming from the cat going to the black hose at the rear of the intake manifold?? Again, the black hose is the one in the picture. By the way at http://www.iluvmyrx7.com/Technical_I...ice_manual.htm you'll find a 88 factory manual to help you in the future. I answered a pm you sent. Did you get my answer???? Also go to http://home.earthlink.net/~burntoast/ and click on the different icons to get familiar with different parts. He has some good references on his site. Book mark it please. EDIT Do you still have your air pump????? And air control valve(see pictues at http://home.earthlink.net/~burntoast/

I am not sure what you are referring to by "nipples". On the '86NA the actuators are operated by back pressure from the exhaust. There is a small diameter line coming off the exhaust pipe that runs to a steel line near the rear actuator. This steel line runs along the bottom of the manifold towards the front where it supplies the front actuator. The actuators themselves receive the air pressure from the manifold via a drilled port in their base. There is no external connection.

For the actuators to work correctly in a stock system the cats need to be there as does the air pump. The air pump supplies fresh air to the cats for the continuation of the emmision control process. When the back pressure in the exhaust system gets to around one and a half pounds the actuators will open. In a system with free flowing exhaust, no cats and/or no air pump there is never enough back pressure to open the aux ports.

The port sleeve valves themselves are very prone to sticking due to a build up of crud internally. The manifold must be removed to get to them for cleaning.

i still have everything that would be there stock. i assumed that the nipples on the bottom of the actuators were the where the pressure hose comes in, i do have that hose running in right behind the back actuator. should this open if the car is revved while sitting still?

The actuators will not normally open when you are just revving the engine on a stock installation. The actuators require exhaust back pressure. The back pressure is created when the combination of engine exhaust under power and air pump pressure cause more gasses to be put into the system than it can dump out thereby causing a pressure build up. When this pressure gets to one and a half pounds per square inch the port actuators will open up.

The first thing to do is try to open the valves by hand when the engine is not running. Just take hold of the little arm and try to move it. If you can't it is a good bet the valves are stuck. This is very common.

You can always wire the valves open and see if you like it. Some say you will lose some low end power, and other say they did not notice any loss. I haven't needed to wire mine open so I can't say for sure. I have my air pump modded to open my ports at 3,500RPM.

I love the kick in the pants at higher engine speeds you get with this system.
