Depends pretty much on what your wallet will allow....
There are a variety of differences between the 87-88TII's and 89-91TII's. The S5 is more desierable by most because of higher horsepower due to the compression increase, a more efficent turbo design, and the aftermarket tends to make a little more for them as well. There are other differences, such as the LSD being clutch type in S4, and viscous in S5 cars.

IMO, if you can afford to get a S5, then go for it...

I have recently come across a black on black turbo with a new rebuilt engine( 2500 miles).. The body is decent and the interior needs work.. I believe the guy is asking $1000 for it.. Mostly because of the engine.. I will found out tomorrow what year it is.. If it is an S4, can that platform be made to make 300whp?? After owning two N/A's, currently 88' GXL, and reading about all the TII's you guys have, I am ready for one too!! I have been looking for S4's and S5's in the Atlanta area and have come up dry every time.. I was fortunate to find out about this one from a guy who drives a 1st gen that knows the guy selling the TII.. I will update as soon as I find out more.. Thanks again,

Jimmy

300rwhp is obtainable with either the s4 or s5 car, but will cost you a decent chunk of change to do it safely. Be sure to read all the information provided in the FAQ about purchasing a TII, do a compression test as recommended. Most importantly, do ALL the normal maintainance stuff to the car before you go buying go fast goodies for it.

$1000 for a TII that is in good mechanical and body shape is a good/excellent price. Check the compression as advised by Corbit. Once you have all the maintainance and whatever problem areas taken care of, do what you please with it. Search and ask questions, there are plenty of threads on how to get 300rwhp and enough members that have already obtained that goal.

Good luck with your TII if you do get it. I am on my second FC, this being the first TII. Its a good car, and has been a lot of fun, but be forewarned, the car COULD turn into a serious money pit if many problems arrise.

Merry Christmas,
Chris

clean s5 TII's go for much much more than s4 TII's. A major negative about s5's are the electric MOP compared to the s4's mechanical MOP. Also s5's have black interior while most s4's had burgundy, grey, blue, etc. and s5's have a better looking exterior in my opinion (body colored mouldings and s5 circle tails).

my opinion is this... it doesnt matter... s5 t2s are more rare if you like a rare car then so be it. but s4 to s5 really dont mean much more a difference... they both have trade offs... turbo design isnt a big enough deal, port it or get another. s5s are chunkier(wieght).... go for the car that works. personally i like the lower compression engine.. and mechanical oil pump... but i hate he s4 nose.

go for an S4...it's cheaper, can be made just as fast as an S5 and u can always put a diff. front bumper...

yeah one of the main differences is price , and s5 tends to be more rare so it might be harder to find parts for an s5. engine rebuilding or jdm motors might be more exensive posibly

i dont like the way s4's look. the wheels suck, the tail lights suck, the front bumper sucks, the seats suck, the door panels suck, the steering wheel sucks, the gauge cluster sucks, and thats about it. everything else is ok.

the tail lights, bumper, etc... can all be changed

Is there a difference in the seat style between s4 and s5, or do you just mean cloth vs leather?

The main disadvantage with the s5 is the weight. There are some smaller things that will **** you off: plastic coolant hose neck, electronic omp etc. but on the whole the s5 is a better car.

I went and talked to the guy yesterday.. It is an S4, 86' I believe?? The VIN# had an H for the year designater.. He also informed me that it had a new rebuilt motor with a new turbo.. I am planning on making this my next project after I finish my 88' GXL.. I am not concerned about the amount of money I spend over the piece of mind of doing it right.. Thanks for all the feedback so far.. Have a MERRY CHRISTMAS Everyone,

Jimmy

Do you have the entire VIN?
Is it JM1FC332...?
Or JM1FC331...?

H VIN is a 1987 model.
The seller claims it's a 1986 model?
1986 Turbo II is really rare.

Something sounds fishy here...

Actually, i don't mind the s5 but either one is awesome, come on there both rx-7s. I LOVE the s4 tail lights, i don't see why so many people want the circle s5 tails.
Sounds like a good project to me, i'm loving my 88t2 project.

Hey Ted, the car being an 86' was my guess.. Here is the whole VIN# JM1FC3327H0153566.. I thought the H meant it was an 86'.. If that means it is an 87' than that is good news.. I am going back to talk to the guy today about buying the car.. I will update everyone tonight about how it went.. Thanks for all the help everyone has given to me.. MERRY CHRISTMAS,

Jimmy

Asthetics is not the most important thing when comparing the s4 to s5. People will argue over that one forever. If you really want an s5, but can only afford an s4, just get all the s5 body parts (bumper, side skirts, tail lights, etc.) and slap them on your s4 when you can afford to. There was a black TII on ebay not too long ago that had this done and it looked super clean.

Its up to you on what you like though, and how much money you have to spend. As long as the car is in good mechanical shape, and won't require too much work and money to fix up, then your good. I prefer the s5 look as well, but now that I own a s4 TII, the looks have grown on me. Oh, except for those tail lights.....you have to be up with the trend and go s5 initial D style, haha.

I love my 88TII however I gotta hand it to the s5's, they do have those subtle but very distinguishable differances that make it a nice sleek looking car as apposed to the s4 more clunky look. Anyways since you have an s4 you can change all that stuff or just make the s4 look really really nice witch is possible. Here is an s4 that doesn't look all that shabby to me https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=367351
