Question Is this car right for me?

Okay, first a little bit about me. I am a graduating senior at Purdue University, never had my own car, b/c I never really needed one. Now that I'm graduating, I need something to drive, and the RX-7 looks like a sweet ride. However:
I am, by no means, a gearhead. I know all about computers (CS major), but pretty much nothing about engines. I can check the fluids, but at the momnet, that's pretty much it. And from what I've heard, the RX-7 can be a troublesome car. Everything from "be careful to take good care of it" to "I hope you or your significant other is a mechanic". My Aunt had one (my original inspiration) and she said she loved it, but "AAA knew me by heart. We had to change the spark plugs all the time, and it needed new wiring". Now, I can read a manual, and wouldn't mind learning something new, but most likely, pretty much the first thing I do when I get it is drive it from here (Indiana) to Alaska. That's a couple thousand miles. I've done it before, and the roads are pretty good. When I last drove, two years ago, there was about fifty miles of dirt road tht they were rebuilding, but I'm not too worried about the road. I AM worried about having a car that can make the trip, and a car that, when I get settled, I can rely on to get me where I'm going when I need to go somewhere. My Dad had a Jaguar that was awesome when it ran. Which was pretty much never. So what do you guys think?
Oh, I should add: I really can't spend any more than $6,000, preferably less. I've been looking around on e-bay, and they have a number of cars in my price range, generally 2nd gen, which is why I posted in this forum.
Thanks in advance!

I would read the FAQ at the top and do some searching. Look for "reliability mods" or something like that. Yes, these cars require some care, but some of them are up to 18 years old now. What sports car that old does not require some TLC?

I have two of them and I would not trade them for the world. You will get hooked on them, problems and all if you get them. You can learn a lot from just searching and reading the threads on here.

The cars are generally reliable if you take care of them. The N/As are less troublesome most of the time than the turbos and it probably would be a good start if you are not mechanically inclinded, but willing to learn.
