WTF w/ 5th gear
WTF w/ 5th gear
Lately when ever I try to shift into fifth gear it feels like it doesnt want to go in and that it is grinding. I really have no clue what is going on, It only happens in 5th. The slower I shift the better it is, but still noticable.
FYI I have a mazdatrix ss installed.
Any help at all will be appriciated. Thanks in advance.

. . .
heh. . .well I'm kinda worried because it just came out of nowhere (that I know of). The car has 41,1xx orginal miles on it atm, so I dun know. It's kinda hard to ignore. What I really want to know is
1. Is it hurtin the car?
2. If it is what needs to be done to fix it?
3. If it isn't what needs to be done to stop the noise/grinding feeling.
Thanks again.

I have a rebuild kit for the T2 tranny its on ebay now. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=7987730689
i had a 89 ford supercoupe that had to have syncromesh...... BEWARE DO NOT SPILL IT ANYWHERE .... DO NOT OPEN IT UNTIL YOU USE IT(curiousity kills) IT SMELLS LIKE HELL. i had an container i had opened in my SC and closed it
put it in the trunk... regardless of which way the wind was blowing i could smell the car even after i threw the bottle away.. treat it like liquid death..... it does work though

it is VERY rare to screw up 5th gear, so it MAY be something else in the transmission.
but first do the basics.
pick up some good full synthetic transmission fluid, like the Redline MT-90, and add some of this also:

i've found it works great to reduce tranny temps and the effects of worn synchros.

So what would be better to use? The Redline MT-90 or the GM syncromesh?
I'm a complete nub to this sort of stuff so every lil bit helps =D.
Would installing the SS have done anything? I dunno, just a thought.
Anyways thanks for all the help.

I would avoid it with a synthetic like the Redline.
I personally don't think that just changing the oil and letting it work itself in (usually will take a couple hundred miles for the effects to be noticed), will solve your problem, and it is more likely a bad or failing syncro or shift fork.
But the gear oil is a lot cheaper than rebuilding the tranny if it solves your problem.

just don't see any evidence not to, unless you know something you didn't post?
but i agree that you shouldn't be using good gear oil to cover up tranny problems. it's just that some people don't have a choice and need their transmissions to last a little longer...

GM synchromesh makes a HUGE difference
(there's 2 version's the one WITH friction modifier is the one u want)
honda's are notorious for weak synchro's (minus the s2k) they grind all the time (it was 2nd gear if i remember correctly)
just go on honda-tech.com search for "gm synchromesh"
u'll find 10,000 posts.. of ppl either recommending it,
or Praising their results
things like "OMG it's smooth as butter now" is not un common to see...
i agree.. normally GM stuff is crap.. but this fluid REALLY works...
i have no experience with MT90 so i can't comment on it

Well for the moment the gear oil is going to have to work. Any ideas of how much rebuilding a tranny myself is vs getting it done by a shop? And what are the prices of a good working TII tranny?
Thanks again.

gah! I just found out my bro changed the tranny oil to redline MT-90 while I was off at boot camp. When I came back and put the SS in I just used regular 90weight gear oil. My question is could that have fubared something up? I have only put a few hundred miles on the car since then.
Thanks again.

5th gear synchro is a very common problem with fc's mine started going out around 90,000 miles, so I bought another tranny on ebay for 150bucks as far as I know the synchro could just be replaced for farley cheap though, thats lucus or anything else didn't help my car, so do what you got to do
