Would this be a good turbo?

I was just wondering, quality aside would this be a good turbo for a 13b? Would the hotside be too small? Would it be an upgrade over the stock single? I'm not good with all the turbine and compressor sizes. If it would be a viable option then what would be the max psi based on the turbo size?

Run away from that "turbo". $164 with shipping included should tell you its a POS. This is a quote from his ebay feedback "The turbo lasted 1000 miles at 8 psi before blowing up into smithereens!!!!!!!!!".
Even if this was a great turbo i would not buy it from this person based on the name alone : ilovetacotaco -- C'mon!

I believe he was asking about the size of the turbo, not whether that exact turbo is good or not...

Figure out what it actually is before making a decision one way or another.

Looking at the photo, it has "Sport JDM" on the intake scroll and "turbobandit.com" on the hot side (a Swedish website)... Looking through the website, it doesn't look like they make anything with "Sport JDM" on their intake side housing, and everything they do has "turbobandit.com" cast into it. Sport JDM seems to be a pretty badly done website that has their own in house brand as well. Both sites are probably having them manufactured in China with their names cast in them (ultra common export manufacturing practice), and probably at the same factory. I would bet money this particular piece, mixed as it is, is b-spec (QC rejects) parts from multiple runs that were effectively the same model and then slapped together into a complete unit. It could be that the flaws were on the other halves, it could be they're the flawed parts themselves.

Here's a (admittedly biased) review/comparison of a "JDM Sport" kit.

I've certainly purchased B-spec parts in the past. Oil pump covers with aesthetic casting voids on the pretty side, guitars with chipped paint, etc. I have only done so when I could verify the nature of the flaw and/or trusted the vender/manufacturer. You can do neither here. What you CAN do is buy the thing with eyes wide open, assume it essentially needs to be rebuilt out of the box, budget for the time and money to track down and buy the appropriate bearings and gaskets, and give it a whack knowing that the inferior materials that were likely used in manufacturing could give out at any minute and turn your engine into an expensive paperweight if shards manage to make their way into the rotor housings.

On the air cooled VW forum I frequent (poor quality aftermarket parts are a major problem in air cooled VW-dom), my signature contains a quote:

"Don't feed the shitty parts monster!!!" - Me.

If you buy that crap, they'll keep making that crap, and maybe even make more of it. You're not only enabling your own suffering, but encouraging the suffering of others. Don't do it! Or do, and do a detailed writeup with lots of photos of the part. Let us all know, honestly, how good or bad it is. Check in after 6 months, a year, five, and maybe it's actually a genuinely good quality part and we're all just snobs looking down our noses at something that could potentially change our lives for the better... Turbos are becoming increasingly common, after all, and the prices should be coming down anyway... Maybe that's just where the market has landed at this particular moment in time...

Let us know what you decide!

If one ignores the fact that particular turbo is a complete POS, if the measurements are to be believed, those specs aren't at all half had for a 13B with some mild port work.

Very similar to a turbo a friend ran on his FD and it was a riot. A started dropping efficiency around 16 PSI at 7000 RPM but who cares? Was a blast around town, on the highway.

Just please, don't buy an unknown China turbo from a random seller on eBay.

I wasn't planning on buying it, I could assume that it was bad from the fact that it's $164. I mean really. I was just asking based on the measurements if that would be a good turbo for a rotary, because often enough it seems that hot sides aren't big enough. I had a friend offer me a Mitsubishi 16g I think it was. I ended up not using it because it would have choked my motor as rotors flow more exhaust then it could have efficiently handled

But maybe I will, I have another motor (used unfortunately) that I could drop in if things went terribly wrong.

On the another note. I saw a post a long time ago laying out each stage of the bnr turbo upgrades with a how to do it yourself. I can't find it. I'm leaning towards a hybrid turbo but I'm not exactly sure which route to take.

Hybrid turbo either way is a step up from stock. I have a panspeed which is equivalent to bnr stage 3. Boost pickup is like stock but boosts much harder later on. Wouldn't look back unless I wanted a whole different setup with gt35rish turbo
