According to the tire size calculator on Miata.net, the OEM S5 TII tires (205/55-16) have an overall diameter of 24.9."

This thing is a lot of help if you're trying to figure out what tires to buy to keep your overall diameter as close as possible to stock:

I'll search through my personal collection tomorrow but for some reason I'm having trouble finding FCs with CR Kais on Google Images.

when selecting tire and rim sizing, is it better to go a little bigger or smaller than stock diameter? Think about a performance scenario say like in drift mode on stock turbo engine power. Does it even matter?

If you're talking about a small variation in overall diameter, I doubt it's going to have much actual impact on performance. Tire brand and tread pattern probably has a much bigger impact. Keep in mind that adding larger wheels and tires increases the unsprung weight on your car, which can negatively impact handling and acceleration.
