Won't go past 7K RPM / 80 MPH
...I really, REALLY searched. In fact, I've been searching for TWO DAYS! LOL
89 vert, manual transmission.
Very good, clean condition.
Cali car.
146K on clock.
All stock, & apparently all original, including exhaust.
Decent acceleration from 4K to 5K (for example). In other words, behaves as expected, until it approaches 6500+ RPM.
Tops out at 7K RPM.
Tops out at 80 MPH.
Revs to redline in driveway, though not very quickly, IMO.
Will climb hills. Noticeable increase in effort to do it, but it will climb.
Revs / climbs smoothly through 3, 4, & 5K RPMs, leading me to believe it is not the electrical problems I've been reading about.
Simply put, this car's engine performance pales in comparison to my stock FB (12A) with headers. I figure it should be at least as good.
What I've done so far...
Changed the fuel filter. No change. Dirty fuel spilled out of the old one, but no chunks of debris.
Couldn't get an air filter, so I did a short run without it. No change. Put it back.
Read Aaron's site and cleaned up the actuators. They did appear stiff/stuck, but not corroded. It was fairly easy to get them cleaned up and freed up without even taking them off the engine. It appeared one was working better than the other, but the engine bay is very very clean, so it's hard to tell when they worked last.
...No dice.
So now from what I've read I'm left with three possibilities; one of which is an electrical problem, which I really don't think it is.
The other two are a compression issue and clogged exhaust.
My initial question is which of the last two possibilities is more likely in a NA vert that doesn't look like it was ever abused a day in it's life?
If there are electrical gremlins specific to my symptoms, I did not find any in my searches, but by all means, lay them out. I'm only excluding that based on what I've read.
If it is a matter of clogged cats, that will get progressively worse in short order, yes?
I'm a carb guy, I know nothing of fuel injection.
Thanks for your help.
