Wiring a turbo timer and immobilising alarm in...

I have the fun task of having to install an immobiliser/alarm and a seperate turbo timer sometime in the next 2 weeks into a 1988 S4.

Just wondering if anyone has some tips for me. I've been told by an experienced alarm installer that the alarm I have will work with a TT. I dont know exactly how it works though...

The alarm is a rhinoco JAG and the TT is apexi autotimer.

My understanding is that the alarm hooks into a few sensors and ignition to tell if the car is being nicked. So if ignition is on, it thinks theres trouble. If the turbo timer is running the engine after you have left the car, wont the alarm think that the car is being nicked?

I'm really not sure hehe...

Any ideas would be brilliant,

Cheers

The ignition lead tells the alarm that the car is on. If the system is armed and ignition reads 12v, then the alarm goes off. Pushing the valet button will disengage the alarm. Most aftermarket alarms come with turbo timer functions, basic ones do not. I.e. the alarm can act as a turbo timer and keep the car at idle for a few moments after the ignition wire loses 12v. Im not sure if that particular model has this feature, but most of the alarms I have installed at work come with this feature.

Hmm, well I was told this alarm would work with any TT.

The alarm I have, it wont let me activate it when the ignition has a +12v signal...

I'm guessing the TT detects when you turn the key to off and then continues providing volts, so according to the alarm, the car is still running... hmmm

anyone actually know how it works hehe?

I believe that the turbo timer is actually pretty simple. Although i've never installed one myself, I can't imagine the actual timer itself is at all that comlicated. I've seen several customers cars with one. The timer should have like 4 wires at the most coming out of it, like 12v+, ignition and a ground maybe an accessory. The TT probably detects the ignition wire losing 12v from turning the car "off" and then it kicks in and turns on the timer and supplies the ignition with 12v. I'm fairly sure thats how it opperates.

Most alarms wont arm or disarm with the keys in the ignition (12v on ignition) so you won't lock your keys in your car, same thing if the doorpin is active (door open). So im pretty much reiterating what you have said, hahaha. If the turbo timer has some sort of 12v output when it turns on, you may be able to use a relay to trick the alarm into thinking the ignition doesnt have 12v when it actually does.

Look through the programming guide on the alarm too, there may be some options you can enable to arm it while the ignition is active or after a certain amount of time after the ignition loses 12v (car turns off). If it is any sort of decent alarm, it should come with a ton of options you can program, and thats probably one of them.
