Wiring the Stereo in an 90 Convertible???
Can anyone help out with some advice on wiring an aftermarket stereo for a convertible with the head rest speakers and crap. I'm pretty good at this kinda stuff but the FC has got me stumped. I did something stupid a while back and cut the harness, not thinking about the fact that i coulda bought an adapter and i d/l a diagram of what the wires were supposed to mean but it was wrong!. I just cant seem to get all the wires speakers working properly, bout all i got going was my subs and door panel speakers. the ones behind the seats arent hooked up and neither are the head rest speakers. Any kind of help will be great! please!

The first thing you need to do is find which wires go to the head rests and find which ones are the ground and the hot wires.
Pick out which wires are ground and which ones are positive. Be sure not to mix them up. Connect the wires you think are the head rests to the deck's speaker wires to test them. When you find the right ones mark them and finish finding the rest of the wires.
If you want the volume control on the console to work you're going to have to wire the speakers through the control like stock, then wire the control to the deck.
If you want the speaker volume to be controlled by the deck's volume then bypass the console control and wire them directly to the deck.
For best sound I would say to connect the head rest speakers to the rear hook ups on the deck.
If this doesn't help post what you're going for in a little more detail please.
Good luck

okay ignore the first two responses and go read the FAQ for FC sticky thread. It has the wire colors and test lights should never ever be used on modern cars.
Now if you had serachd, you would have found the wireing diagram for the convertible stereos with headrest speakers:
and he bottom half of that:
as you can clearly see there are dedicated amps for the head rest speakers and the rear woofer.
Do you have the amp turn on wire hooked up???

thanks for the input from both of yall and, icemark i did search but i couldnt find this diagram all i found was the diagrams for the coupe w/o headrest speakers. can you tell me what you typed in on search so i can pull up the diagram you got there... maybe it'll be a little clearer. I havent messed with any of the stock amps so i'm not sure about all that. all i've done was take out the fact. stereo and i got another one half-assed installed with only the doorpanel speakers workin and my subs. i didnt have a lot of time to mess with it so it not done.

Alright, I guess I'm a DA! I normally dont have any problems with this kinda stuff and i'm having trouble with the diagram above! Does anyone just have what each color coded wire stands for that is coming into the back of the stereo unit. That would be so helpful.

I'm not asking for advice or comments of any kind for posting this!
If you are having trouble finding what wires go to what try to trace them. I have traced factory wires from the dash to the rear of the vehicle before. It is time consuming but not impossible. If you are looking for speaker wires pull the speaker out of the door remember what color its wires are, put it back and find those colored wires in the hole you have. After you know which ones are the front do the back the same way. If you are looking for power wires trace them through the dash until they are either connected to something or go into a wire wrap (in this case your s.o.l.). You probably won't find the constant power wire but you might be able to find the acc. wire and ground.
If you still have trouble PM me and I'll see if I can find anything on my 89 vert that would help.
Again I don't care if you think I don't know anything so don't waste your time telling me.

well, never mind... i spent this afternoon out there and figured it out on my own. i compared the two and got it all sorted out. the only speakers not working are the ones behind the seats, which arent a big deal... you could barely hear them when they did work. And the volume control for the headrest speakers wont work. They are increasing with volume as i turn my aftermarket stereo's volume up. Any suggestions on this? If not its fine. I do appreciate everyone's help and patience. sorry if i bothered anyone

I use a double AA battery and a rear tail light bulb. with the battery disconeted you want to peal the cables and start to connect 2 cables to the 2 poles of the battery when you get two that match the speaker should make a sound, tape them and go for the other ones repeat till you get the 4 speakers, then you grab the bulb and put your own negative to the body and start plugging wires to the positive of the bulb looking for the constant 12v power, then do the same one othe wires alternating acc on and off. done deal it might sound stupid but hey it works with out no expensive tools

Sorry to thread jack. But it is in keeping with the topic. I have an aftermarket stereo. How would you hook up a small aftermarket amp (with RCA's) to the headrest speakers and still use the factory center console controls?
