wiring questions

ok, so i've searched and all i could come up with is people telling others to do an entire chassis harness swap. so heres my problem, i hav an 87 sport shell that i will be putting a s5 TII motor in today. i got all the hardware for it except the BOV. got the engine wire harness, and ecu. i also have a chassis plug from a 90 N/A. so i was looking at the wiring diagrams, and i dont understand how they label the pin layouts. also, what are the two plugs under the dash above the ecu from the engine harness from, those should be color matching if im correct? i was thinking of just repinning the two plugs to make them fit the s4 plugs, and repinning the chassis harness. my questions are, for N/A to TII, are the ecu pin layouts the same? i have the haynes manual and they have pin locations, but like i said, i dont know how to label the pin locations. if anyone has done this swap before and has wiring diagrams that they created, let me know please so that i could follow your diagram, or if anyone could just provide me a kno how of how to label the pins, that'd be great too. thanks

p.s. i need a BOV too if anyone in So. cal has one for sale, im in anaheim so just let me know please thanks

You can always download the FSM Wiring Diagrams...

What don't you understand about the pin layouts? As in, 1B=?, 2A=?, 3F=?, or what?

This should help...

no, i've seen that it mentions nothing about the connections wiring between the chassis harness and engine harness because its telling me to run s4 electricals, but the problem is i had an s4 na, and this is an s5 t2... so i need to swap electricals, and i dont have the complete chassis harness

All the answers are in the FSM's.
Are you telling us you don't know how to read the FSM's?

How to read a connector pictue attached.

Rid yourself of the Haynes at this time.

Download the S5 and S4 FSMs but just the FUEL section and the wiring diagrams.

Those two plugs you mention are referenced as FEM-01 and FEM-02 in the wiring diagrams.

Then you NEED to find out what each of the wires does in life in each of the plugs called FEM-01 and FEM-02, THEN rearrange them/swap them/terminate them/whatever them.

I think by now you know you have a STEEP learning curve to overcome, but everybody started somewhere.

That sad, in the past I made a Word document of the S4 plugs. In the S4 1987 manual they are called X-15 and X-16 instead of FEM-01 and FEM-02, so take that into consideration.

PLUS, I make ERRORS at times, so look for ERRORS. I made this list for someone else and had no vested interest in double checking each wire again. So attached are a few more jpgs.

hey hailers, i searched and found that u posted partially the pinout for the s4 ecu on another page, i was wondering if u had the full copy? also, for the fem-01 and fem-02, there is another connector, and then for the s5 what are those connectors called, and do u kno where i could find the diagram for those, cause i couldnt find a detailed wire diagram for the s5 like the one for an s4 thanks

What did you use to crank the motor for the compression test? The motor has to be spinnin at a decent speed to get a good reading. At those compression numbers, I think you need a rebuild.

As far as wiring goes, I'm doing the same thing, an s5 t2 engine into an s4. Instead of repinning all the connectors, I just bought a microtech.

interesting, i would go microtech or haltech, but money is an issue at the moment, and so is time, as far as the compression test, the motor is installed with the tranny and starter, so it was cranking at normal speed... anyone know what size hole that spark plug is, maybe my end is leaky... iono

The pinouts for the series four and series five are in the FUEL section of the respective FSM's that are available for a free doenload. You can just download the Fuel sections and not the rest of the manuals (you need to download wiring diagrams too).

Each Fuel section has a section called CONTROL UNIT and that is the pages your wanting. BUT that is just for the ECU pins, not the other two large plugs that are called FEM--1 and FEM-02. To know what the wires in those plugs do you have to go thru the wiring diagrams and figure it out for yourself.

If I remember right I posted a jpg of the series four FEM-01 and FEM-03 on a Word document that described what each wire did on each of those plugs for a series four. I care not to do that for series five . Absolutley no interest. I'll pull weeds in the back yard first, and that ain't a gonna happen either.

The pinouts on my Word document ..............I called the plugs X-15 and X-16. On later cars they are called FEM-02 and FEM-02 respectively.

Alt should not buzz. The BAC will buzz. Normal.

Unplug the BAC and see if the buzz goes away.

wat does an air pump do? i got the engine from someone on the forum, and noticed it doesnt have an airpump. i tried to use my N/A airpump, but it gets in the way of the intake, and doesnt line up with the pipe for the airpump... should i do about that? could i just plug the hole, and hope it'll run? lol thanks

so i get spark and fuel, but its not starting... its cranking and everything but it wont fire... the previous owner ran the fcon and safc... so im thinking one of the fuel wires arnt connected, any ideas? on the s4 harness there was a giant thing under the AFM that looked like a distributor block for electricity, and it was connected with the fuel injectors... s5 doesnt have one? then wat powers the fuel injectors? i think i might not be getting enough fuel from my fuel pump, cause its not spitting out, its kind of crawling out...
