The WHITE/black wire is for alternator excitation (and a trigger for all the warning lights to come on if the alternator isn't putting out) and the BLACK/white wire is switched power to the alternators regulator.
If the WHITE/black is not connected up the alternator might or might not put out when just started up, but if it does not put out upon start up, then if one revs the engine pretty high, the alternator will self excite and start putting out. That sounds a bit like what is happening to your.
See the online FSM section called ENGINE ELECTRICAL for trouble shooting the alternator.
The WHITE/black wire comes out of the CPU near your left foot via the ALT WARING RELAY circuit. Meter fuse powers it. The BLACK/white wire is tied to the ENGINE fuse.
IF the engine runs you know the engine fuse is good and if the gauges work the meter fuse is good.

I don't understand. On a stock series four alternator there is an electrical plug located near the back of the stock alternator. It has two wires. One is black/white and the other white/black. That plug only goes on the stock series four one way.
If you put a series five alt on the series four car, then the black/white wire of the original plug will not be used. The white/black will/can be used. You'd run a new wire from the EGI fuse in the engine bay to the alternator jack (terminal on the left of the jack) and jumper a wire from
the original elect plug on the harness (white/black) to the jack on the series five alternator (terminal to the right on the jack). Should work, does for me.
