Wiper Wars! Episode 1
Well, this past weekend I gave up living with no mist or intermittent wipers and decided to fix the switch!
Of the 3 relays in the assembly of my '91, this is the functions that I found they controlled:
The top relay (G6C-2117P-FD-TM) controls all (only) of the rear wiper movements. The middle relay (G8S-117P--FD-04) powers front wipers low speed movements, includes mist and intermittent as these happen at low speed only. The bottom relay (G6C-2117-P-FD-TM) controls front wiper movements for high speed, park, mist and intermittent.
So with the above in mind you should be able to determine which relay needs replacing. I know that it has been posted here before that while in there that you replace all of them, BUT, They are not the easiest to un-solder and if you overheat the circuit board you may end up with a bigger problem on your hands! Remember that the bottom relay controls multiple events so it is possible to have some functions work such as hi-speed while the mist doesn't work. In my case the lo and hi speed worked, but the park, mist and intermittent functions didn't. With this scenario, the lo speed power was getting through the middle relay, and the hi speed was getting through the lower relay but the park, mist and intermittent functions were impaired. For my wipers the lower relay was the problem, and even when I had the relay out on the bench and checked the continuity everything checked out like it's replacement relay, but don't be fooled, the coil was not able to hold the contacts closed and the operation was intermittent.
Before you reassemble the entire cluster, test the switch by re-connecting (with the ignition off first) and then operating the wipers in their various modes.
As for replacement parts I was able to order the following from the local electronics parts store:
For the upper and lower (small) relays G6C-2117P-FD-TM, I got an exact replacement (electrical and physical) by ordering G6C-2117P-US-DC12 ($7.67 CDN). For the middle relay (larger and white) G8S-117P-FD-04 by ordering G5LE-14-DC12 ($2.22CDN), also the same electrically and physically. All of the parts numbers are OMROM.
As for instuctions the best so far that I have found are at this URL http://www.zapta.com/tal/rx7/wiper/main.html
Good Luck!
