Will the RX8 trans bolt onto a 13b? I found a local one for cheap and i'm thinking of doing it just because i'm due for a rebuild on mine and it's way cheaper...

 

nope not a direct bolt on.
with some work and fabrication, it will work somehow.

but you also have to consider there is practically no advantage over the stock TII tranny. it is geared for the Renesis and RX-8 chassis and was not really designed for the torque output a turbo rotary is capable of.

 

The FAQ is your friend.

 

Actually the synchros are largewr than those in a T2 tranny, just if you are too hard on the 2nd gear synchro it kills itself for some reason.

To get it to attach to the engine youll need a tii flywheel and an RX-8 clutch, then you'll need the slave cylinder and a way to attach it to your master cylinder.

I've heard there might be issues with the shifter position, also you may need a custom driveshaft and you'll probably have to fabricate some sort of a mount or mount adapter.

I imagine the TII starter should work but im not exactly sure.

That's not eniterly true what is written in the FAQ, I've graphed the differences between the two trannies and they're much different. The extra gear comment that I've heard isn't accurate. Lemme give ya some advice. I did a TON of research into that tranny and here's what I've found.

First the easy stuff.

1) Use a TII flywheel & Clutch

2) I was planning on using the FE slave and having a custom line made. There are adapter plates available so you can use an FB slave.

3) You need to use an RX8 starter

4) Custom driveshaft and tranny mounting

The comments subject to opinion

5) The gearing through the first 5 is great. They are very evenly spaced and in talking to some racers they LOVE the thing. If it was a 7 spd it would be ideal because as said in the FAQ, you will be spinning the motor faster on the highway in 6th on the FE tranny than 5th in ANY FC tranny. Soooooo, how much highway driving do you do? I do very little so this was kind of a moot point however I do intend to drive to Cali this fall so coast to coast it would suck paying ~ 15-17% more for gas :EEK:

6) Another problem is in the tranny itself. Without going into great detail it will hold the power, but it won't stand up to hard shifting. There IS a fix for this despite what alot of people are saying. I could point you in two different directions to talk to two different people to fix it two totally different ways.

7) The worst part about it is the length of the tranny itself. Having measured the TII and haveing a buddy on the RX8Club measure a spare, the shifter on the FC 5spd is 3.875" farther back than the FE tranny. So, if you want to keep your interior, you either need to set the motor 3.875" into the firewall (difficult), fabricate some external shift linkages and modify the tranny (Expensive) hack your interior. Choice is yours.

Personally if I can find one on the cheap after the car is actually running, I plan to explore option #2. Getrag would be a better option though, gearing is eh but the tri-pod mounting of the shifter makes option #2 ridiculously easy. But they are $$ and rare too. Then of course Quaife is supposedly coming out with a 6-spd set for the TII box (or was it FD box??) but that will be even more expensive.
